the barage of stupid question from a noob begins. What is the dif between socket 423 and 478?

Socket 423 was for the older P4's with the Willamette core and 256k L2 cache. They ran at higher voltage, and hotter than the Northwood. I think they went to 2.0Ghz at 400fsb, something around there.

Socket 478 is for the more recent Northwood core with 512k L2 cache. They run from 400-800fsb (533fsb in the middle there). These are what you would buy if u decided to go with a P4. There's no reason to buy a sock423 willamette over a sock478 Northwood.

OverVolt has it right. If you're looking for a physical difference, the number in the name represents the number of pins the socket handles.
