Socket A FSB 333 or FSB 400 in a FSB 266 or older MB

My sister has an older FSB 200/266 motherboard, will it accept a Socket A Barton FSB 333
or 400 core processor?

Does the motherboard automatically run it at a lower multiplier?

It would run it at the same multiplier, but lower FSB, so lower clockspeed overall. If you wanted to run it at the same clockspeed as originally rated, but in a board with a lower FSB, then you would have to raise the multiplier, which is not possible on many newer socket A chips.

Barton support would be up to the BIOS. Make sure that you have the latest.

what board are you trying to use?...you should be able to run at a lower FSB with a higher multiplier...assuming your board has BIOS support for the barton core (most older 266fsb board don't support the barton core AXP's)

Its an old MSI K7N420Pro which from what I read on the MSI site does not support Barton or any "Core Model 10" AXP's.

I was under the impression it would boot but just run at the lower FSB which would be slower than a properly supported chip.

I'm going to get the fastest support chip from eBay and not take a gamble.

The extra cache and changes due to the smaller manufacturing process might cause you issues. The 333/400fsb chips are similar to the older 266 Palominos and Thunderbirds, but depending on the mobo it may not work at all.
