Okay, Lately I've been reading up on all this cpu mumbo jumbo, and I have gotten a AMD64 3200+ on a socket 754 board (Asus K8V SE DLX) about 3 weeks ago. I didnt read up on the other CPUs, namely the FX53 and the 3800+ CPUs on the socket 939s/940 boards.

I am just wondering, if I were to upgrade again now, which would be too soon considering this rig is less than a month old, would it be a waste? I dont think the dual chan RAM and extra mhz on the socket 939 CPUs eg. FX53, 3800 + will make much of a diff in performance would it?

What is the main differences in performance and features, between the s9xx boards and the 754 boards? Additionally, what CPUs run on what boards? Opterons and FXs on 939, Athlons and Semprons on 754?

Also, my other question is, if i were to upgrade to a FX53 which I am currently eyeing as my next upgrade, would there be a big diff in performance between the FX53 and my current CPU the 64 3200+
Or should I just OC as much as I can to hit the FX53 clock speed of 2.6ghz..

Another thing about the S939/940 boards, are they the way to go for the future? as I think the highest proc for 754 is the 3700? If i were to upgrade in the future, so i should have gotten a s939/940 board instead of this 754 board, as they have the FX55 and 4000+ coming out in the near future correct? Or will the 754 socket still be supported by AMD in the future?

Appreciate your replies, I know how frustrating it must be, but I am not too pc savvy and i could use some advice.

Thanks.

Socket 754 is for Athlon64 754 pin and some Semperons.

Socket 939 is for dual channel Athlon64 939 pin, and FX53/5/1 that are 939 pin (some are 940)

Socket 940 is for FX51/53(some) and ALL Opterons.

With what you have now, the only real difference you would notice is a new video card. Even an FX53 wouldn;t be that much faster.

Hmm, I guess I could OC it to FX speeds with the proper cooling, but i doubt the overclockbility of my mobo =)

you should be able to hit at least 2.4 i would guess even with that 3200+

is it a newcastle or clawhammer? (512 kb or 1 meg kb?)

2.2 to 2.4 is not a problem even w/o agp or pci lock... uhh.. well at least i don't think so... hehehe

I am using a newcastle CPU, and yes that is a pretty sweet mobo :)

I guess even if i upgrade, it wont make a difference as most games that i run pretty much wont use all the power that is in my system, eg rome total war.
