Socket 940 or wait for socket F?

Fair enough....I think I'm also very curious about the performance/packaging quad-core will bring. Especially for a workstation, as single socket - quad core solutions will allow for a very powerful, yet small system.

well aren't u special...i know a lot of people that do that.....

as many have insisted, go with the 940. if you upgrade often (which you still haven't defined), then it'll be time for an upgrade a couple months after socket f comes out. i would wait at least 4 months after a new socket comes out so that'll give you about a year til your next upgrade.

Supermicro H8DCE mobo
2x Opteron 270
4x 1GB REG ECC RAM, haven't decided exactly what sticks
8 port SATA RAID controller, PCI-e, haven't decided brand
4x 250 GB HDD from current rig
7800 GT from current rig
Audigy 2 ZS Gamer from current rig
Haven't decided on PSU yet, but it needs to give >700w and be SSI compatible with a 24 pin, 8 pin and 4 pin mobo connector, and the PC P&C one is just too overpriced
Powercool PCI-e TV tuner card, to replace current one, because Haupauge doesn't want to support 64-bit
DVD burner from current rig

Yeah, ok.... I'll be using it for photochop (GIMP actually), some video editing, some 3d work, Gaming, Folding, and of course day to day activities.

I'd wait. You may be suprised to find AMD fully embracing EFI with 1207. If nothing else, Intel may not be a bad choice in the near future with Conroe. Nothing you do could utilize 4 cores simultaneously, unless you have a burning desire to spend a ton of money just so you can do F@H all the time. Certainly don't get anything Intel now though.

if you didn't already know you were getting an Areca Arc-1220 you do now. Newegg has the best deal. I have several Areca HBAs, and the ARC-1230 w/1GB upgrade is the fastest HBA I've ever used. Ever. Though, either way 250GB drives FTL. I'd rebuild the array with WD3200KS (cheap POWAR) or WD4000YRs.. WD5000KS are supreme now, but definitely not cost effective.

For PSU wait for the Seasonic M12 700w modular.

If you do decide on Dual 940, i use Corsair CM72SD1024RLP-3200 RAM for my sig rig.

Anyway, I had a feeling you'd drop into this thread. I know that nothing can use 4 cores ATM, although being able to fold, game, and encode all at the same time is spiffy. I'm not a big Intel fan, althought I may look their way. On that note, I know it's suposed to be spiffy, but why am I interesed in EFI?

I'm getting an Areca-1220? Really? Well, thanks for telling me. Seriously though, that card did look fairly spiffy, especially with the 1gb cache option. I'm not really interested in purchasing a new set of drive ATM, I actually might buy 4 more identical ones so I can have 7 plus hot spare in the array, and their dirt cheap right now. That seasonic PSU does look nice. The Corsair was what I was look at for ram, Newegg has it for $109 a stick.

The ARC-1220 (8 port) has 128MB onboard. The ARC-1230 (12 port) has 256MB ECC SODIMM. So if you want to upgrade the cache you need the 1230. Don't forget a ARC-6120. Then set the write-back cache to full tilt and laugh at the people spending $300 for raptors.

Mmmm, write back cache... although the higher risk does bother me some, but with a nice backup module I might tolerate it. Or I might just foregoe the module and just set it to write through... Eh, I dunno. Write back is nice, but data inconsistency sucks... Also, if I go with the 128MB model, it doesn't make a huge difference, and it is cheaper... hmm, decisions, decisions. Also, your link is borked.

Another thing, how is the K8WE working for you? The folks at Hardocp don't seem to like it, and I think I'm gonna go with the H8DCE, if I decide to go with socket 940, but I'm not sure. Of course, if I get socket F, that changes things.

If you can justify dual-socket 940, then the ARC-1230 is definately worthy of priotizing. It's usefullness will only increase with more cache and hard drives. If anything is worthy of spending money for long term value, it's a nice HBA. Same class as PSUs and monitors.

M2 is basically just DDR-2 not worth it. Rember Gaming is gpu dependent if your a gamer if you do alot of multi-tasking get a dual core processor.

I dunno, supermicro rocks, but given their past unwavering support for only Intel, I'm wary of support on an AMD board. I haven't had any unresolvable issues with my S2895A2NRF though. If I was buying a new workstation, I'd feel uncomfortable with no representation on thier site.

True. It's just a lot to spend. That's probably what I'll end up getting thought. I can see it screaming with 7 drive RAID 5, 16mb cache drives, 1gb Cache, on a PCI-E slot.

Actually, it DOES have representation on their sight, look for A+ products. Their just not advertising it. And it already has a BIOS update out, but apparently the original one has no decernable issues at all, so it seems cool. It is cheaper, so that might sway me. Of course, if I go with Socket F it then have to look at the new offerings....
