I have an older board socket 939, I currently have a 3500+ CPU in it. Would a 939 dual core amd chip work in the board or even though it has 939 pins it won't fit? Or is it just a matter of if my bios has an update that will allow 939 x2's?

The pins on all 939 CPUs are the same, regardless if it's a single core, dual core X2, or Opteron. Just make sure you're running the latest BIOS for your board and the X2 should work just fine.

I just upgraded my skt 939 mobo from a single core A64 to a dual core opteron. It's a piece of cake. It is a good idea to check your mobo manufacturer for cpu support and you might not be able to OC as much as you would like on an old board, but otherwise you will be fine. That is a great way to get another year or more out of an older board, too!

I just looked on NCIX.com and it's around $150 for a 3800+ dual core chip. You'd be far better off with a C2D IMO; they're cheaper and much better, plus DDR2 is way cheaper than DDR1 (and you get a good upgrade path with Penryn).

sickbeast, you should stop looking at ncix.com. x2 3800's toledo cores are going for 85 bucks or so on newegg. Opty's go for 100$ or so.

79.99$ Toledo
97.00$ Opteron 165
