socket 939 - when does it get reasonable ($$$-wise) to get ?

hi,

i plan to build in fall. Everyone says "Socket 939 - whoo - whoo".
Problem is only that the A64 socket 939 CPUs are far too expensive.

When can we expect reasonable prices for Socket 939 AMD CPUs ? Otherwise i might have to go socket 754 because i do not WANT to spend more than, say, $270 on a CPU...the socket 939 CPUs are all almost $500 which i wont spend. (I am not THAT stupid 🙂

I don't know.. but hopefully soon. I'm buying socket 754 soon. Theres really no reason not to get 754, it performs just as well and by the time you look to upgrade your processor, you'll probally want a pci-e graphics card, so the upgradibility argument is irrevelant.

This article speculates that the Athlon 64 3500+ will be at $245 by Nov. 1. I'd bite at that price. I think I might even give in to spending $417 for a 90 nm 3800+, if they overclock well.

Yea, I may just wait til around Christmas to get a socket 754 one. Mabye they'll be paired with PCI-E mobos by that time. I always like the cheaper alternative 😉

Hell, they don't even offer that much more performence than a 754. I see no reason to buy them at all period.

thats exactly why i wait....i assume pci-ex mobos out late this year

if i'd get an AMD 3500 for $245 in november, maybe a bit better (3600, 3700...) for $270 (which is my limit)...that would be great. i just hope i can resist building 'til then 🙂

I just had the impression a few months ago that socket 754 is dead and there's no light besides socket 939....but seeing the prices...well ehrm its ridiculous. Lookinf forward how everything looks in November 🙂

I've read that Nforce 4 will be out by the end of the year and support PCI-E and both 754 and 939. Not on the same board I assume, but at least you will be able to get a 754 PCI-E solution.

The dual processor Nforce 3 boards are juuust about becoming available. At the prices of of socket 939, opterons suddenly dont look that much more expensive 🙂
of course right now nvidia is charging more for their more expensive processors and giving the channel a chance to clear their inventory of socket 754. Eventually almost all the processors for the American and European markets will be 939, but certainly not this year. I think PCIe and 939 should be more affordable by Christmas as others have suggested.

Totally OT: Hmm... isn't 'manko' japanese for... well you can go look it up 😉

Nvidia doesn't make Athlon 64s and Opterons. 😛
