It's been a while since I researched computer parts so I'm a bit out of the loop. Could someone please fill me in on the differences between socket 939 and 754? Why are the 754 Athlon64s cheaper?

The 754's are cheaper because it's being phased out. I don't think there will be any more CPU's from AMD in Socket 754.All future CPU's will be socket 939's. There's not much reason to go 754 since the Socket 939 A64 3000+ and 3200+ were made available.

Saving a cpl of dollars to go 754 really isn't worth it.

Probably they will support dualcore processors in the future, so it's going to stick around for the next couple of years.

Socket 939 is AMD's new platform for 64 processors and are the way of the future but 939 does not support dual processors.

I think he was referring to AMD's upcoming dual-core processors that will most likely debut as socket 939 compatible. or did I just misunderstand?

Does anyone know for sure whether AMD's next line of CPUs are going to be 939 or not?

They probably will be, AMD took a lot of grief for chainging sockets 3 times. They've found 939 and they seem happy, I have a feeling it will stay that way for awhile

The dual procs are Opteron and I am not aware that they will be 939's. As far as I know the Opterons wil be socket 940.
I could not find that info on AMD's website here:

i jus went from k8n neo plat 3200+(754) to k8n neo2 plat 3200+(939) same vid card and everything, didnt expect to see much of a gain jus wanted to try new hardware out and i went from 11000 to 11700 on 3d mark so it must be a little bit better

Socket 754 use single channel ram.. that is why they are cheaper, and besides the 754 are phasing out and i don't think that AMD will make any more CPU's for that mobo...

definately go 939 if buying now, technology wise dual channel has got that much to offer Athlon 64 over single channel, but for future proofing it makes more sense to buy 939 less your on a tight budget

i think 754 maybe retained for a while, and just left to low spec A64's and K8 based semprons

Socket 754 will be kept around for Sempron and mobile Athlon 64 chips.
