Socket 939 MoBo dual channel memory question

Looking at a motherboard correctly setup with two 512Mb memory sticks and operating in dual channel mode. Adding a single 512 stick will work, but dual channel mode will cease.
There will be a performance hit with the loss of dual channel.

My question: Will the increase from 1 Gb to 1 and 1/2 Gb outweigh the loss of dual channel support?

another question: Are you applications memory intensive?

Large applications go with lots of ram no matter the bandwidth
Games go with bandwidth. Large bandwidth can decrease the detrimental effect by the ram shortage.....
