Socket 939 HSF Suggestions Requested

I'm picking up this motherboard.

I will be replacing the chipset hsf with a passive heatsink. I want to get a quiet CPU cooler that will give me some room to overclock. What should I get?

I'm considering the XP-120 but I'm worried it will be a PITA any time I need to get in the comp and work or swap ram or something. The XP-90 worries me because I think it may not be quiet enough.

Any suggestions?

I'm not even sure the XP-120 will fit on your motherboard. it isn't listed on the compatibility list at TR's site. I would just get an XP-90 with a really quiet fan.
 
Yeah...the board is new so I'm not sure it would have made it on their compatability list yet (if it fits).

With good(proper) case airflow (and a decent room temp), the Xp90 and a quiet 92mm will be plenty for any oc IMO. The Xp120 will get you a tad better performance w/ a little less noise, but need to check for mobo compat as others have stated. The only PITA factor for me on the XP120 is the retention clips. Hold on tight!! when you secure them. Its a doozy!
 
from the last reviews, it doesn't seem like the zalman is not as quiet as everything else they have, and yes, it is louder than the xp-90.
I am now interested in the big typhoon by thermaltake. It is big, but very quiet and better performmer than the xp-90, xp-120.
I don't have it yet because I'm not as bored as to want to remove my motherboard again
(not yet anyway)
 
How about the Thermalright SI-120? If you want to make sure you could always contact Aopen tech support, they have been helpful for me in the past.

Do you plan on changing the northbridge HSF? I've been waiting for Aopen's 939 board for awhile and plan picking it up for future 939 build.

Yes. I have a nice NB heatsink. Looks like the one on my DFI NF2 Ultra Infinity. I'll probably use that but first will measure the dimensions compared to a Zalman. If the Zalman is a lot bigger, I may buy one.

I'll check out the SI-120. Never heard of it so that should be interesting. Looking at the AOpen board, it looks to have a lot of room around the socket so I'm thinking just about any CPU cooler will work. What do you guys think?

Thanks for all the feedback and options. I'm checking them all out and weighing price/performance/noise level into a complicated quadratic equation to determine satisfaction level. I will then differentiate it and set the resulting mathematical expression to zero and solve to determine which combination of features provides the peak satisfaction. 😀

I have the AOpen board, and am using the XP-90C with a Panaflo M1-A fan. It is not dead silent, but close. The L1-A fan is dead silent. If you intend to OC to a great extent, then the M1-A is the fan I would go with. The socket area might NOT allow a XP-120. There are some capacitors that are within pretty close proximity to the side of the HS retention bracket towards the front of the mobo.

With either the XP-90C or XP-120, you will hook it from the front first (towards the DIMM slots) and then press down rearward. It will be somewhat challenging as these guys have VERY strong spring steel clips on them.

Also checkout the Thermaltake K450 at NewEgg. It is a dual heatpipe cooler that hangs on really tight, too. It is the shipping h/s fan with the X2 processors. It won't allow EXTREME overclocks, but it will suffice I would say.
