Do you think we'll ever see s939 2.4 ghz X2's in stock anywhere again? I scoured the net a bit and it sure looks dry...
Gone for good, do you think?

I think so. Personally, I tried to replace my FX-55 with a 939 FX-60 variant that was dual core but no luck. Well, I did find them but they were around $400.

I don't know what you are talking about, there are 8 different ones just on newegg.com including X2 Opterons (185,175, etc...)

oops, see edit Mark, I neglected the desired clock speed of 2.4 Ghz, read X2 4800+ I do see a 180 Opteron at new egg, but that's the only option.

Opteron 180 and 4800 X2 are the same in every respect (except price). The label is different, but no design difference, maybe just bin quality.

Buy a x2 3800+ @ 2.0ghz and overclock it to 2.4ghz? It's easy peasy and gives you what you want, a dualcore AMD s939 cpu at 2.4ghz.

Except 4600+ :p

Dual cores on Skt 939,
3800+/4200+/4600+ have 512kB L2 per core.
Opterons, FX60 and 4400+/4800+ have 1MB L2 per core.

Dear Su,

a 2.0 Ghz socket 939 to 2.4 Ghx socket 939 (both dual core) upgrade is going to give different results, depending on the software.

Here is a link to Tom's Hardware CPU charts with the 2.0 and 2.4Ghz CPUs dialed in, assuming it links correctly:

http://www23.tomshardware.com/...0&model2=477&chart=171

There are a lot of benchmarks/programs you can check to compare the two; you can compare some game benchmarks, or office/graphics benchmarks.

PCmark2005 goes from about 4100 to 4900.

Depends. How much is is max 20% perfromance upgrade worth to you?

Why not pick up an Athlon X2 4200 for $70 shipped at Newegg and then overclock it to 2.4 Ghz or whatever speed you want (within the chip's limits)?

Why not overclock the x2 3800+ to 2.6ghz? It will overclock to that fairly easy. Going from a x2 3800+ to a opteron 180 doesn't look worth it to me. If you need extra performance, go p35 with a e6750 and overclock it to 3.4ghz. That will give a significant performance increase, in fact, it will be twice as fast as the x2 3800+.

I tried to overclock this particular cpu and got terrible results after many trials. Mind you, it's a manchester, not toledo if I got that straight. It's also not in my possession so I can't afford to leave it in a less than perfectly stable state. The user will be doing some rendering so a possible 20% boost starts to sound viable. Sure wish I could find a new x2 4800+ (cheaper, as I recall).

Aww that's too bad. I'd upgrade from my 3800x2 only if I was going to overclock it like mad. I have had my 3800x2 at 2.4ghz going strong for a year and a half.

Just got the x2 4200+ from newegg yesterday. It does 2.5 no problem (and I'm a very lazy oc'er).
