Socket 939 CPU for older computer?

My old CPU broke (and hopefully nothing else) so I have a whole new computer now pretty much and the old one is just collecting dust. The mobo is an ASSrock DualSATA2, socket 939. Newegg doesn't have 939 CPUs anymore (i guess CPU parts go out of style pretty quick). So I don't know what CPU to get or where to get one. I think this mobo can support AM2 CPUs also, but the details are confusing. The 939 Socket was also kinda damaged, but not too bad, just scratched up a bit, so I'm hoping it'll still work.

edit: fixed all the errors

Are you talking about the 4CoreDual-SATA2, or the 939Dual-SATA2? Is this an AMD rig or an Intel rig? The reason that I ask, is that the 939 version did have an AM2 upgrade slot on the mobo. The Intel 775 version does not support AM2. NewEgg does have plenty of Socket 775 CPUs, but they are out of 939 CPUs.

Err, Socket 775 is the current Intel processor socket... I don't know how you can't find one...

exactly what I was thinking, every Intel processor listed as "core 2" is a Socket 775, even most celerons and pentiums.

Sorry, but 939 socket motherboards can ONLY support 939 cpus, nothing else. You either need a new mother board (which entails getting a new CPU and new ram) or a new 939 cpu (ebay, or amazon.com will probably be your best bet). Kind of a tough situation.

Asrock makes a couple of boards with ddr support for Intel core2 duo 1066 cpus, if you want to use your old ddr memory. But I would test the memory first in another system; otherwise, be prepared to get ddr2 for any newer cpu. Might as well get ddr2 while it's cheap.

My old Mobo (DualSATA2) supports both 939 and AM2, but like I said the details are confusing and you have to buy an additional part I think. It might be the only mobo to support both socket types.

The Asrock 939 Dual Sata2 has a cpu slot called the "Future CPU Slot" which when used with a AM2CPU board (which can be hard to find) can be upgraded to use the latest AM2 processors from AMD. The Asrock 939 Dual Sata2 uses DDR memory but AM2 uses DDR2 memory so to use the AM2CPU board you will need an AM2 processor and DDR2 memory.

If you do decide to go down the AM2CPU board route to use the latest AM2 processors you will need an updated beta bios which if you send me a message I will let you know where they can be obtained from.

I've got an old A64 3200 (ADA3200DAA4BP, LBBLE 0519) sitting in the box my A64 X2 came in. It's in good condition and worked fine until I upgraded to the X2. I've also got the unused stock HSF from when I got the X2. Let me know if you're interested. I don't normally sell things on these boards, but I thought I might be able to help. I'd always planned to do something with it, but never had time.

It is definitely not a common feature. I don't know of any purchasable adapters, in fact, without direct bios support I double it is doable (I had to look up the board to believe you :)) If that isn't your board then you options are pretty much what I listed above.

Alrighty, a s939 CPU sounds a lot easier and then I won't have to buy new RAM for my old computer also.

I can probably find a good deal on a 939 CPU online somewhere, but I'll let you know if I become interested SLIM.

Ebay or Craigslist is really gonna be the only places you'll find s939 processors now. All else is like left overs of like 1 model, like that NE link.

I'd say just save up a few hundred bucks and make a complete AM2 switch (ram, mobo, cpu). Should only need like $400 to do it.

If you haven't ordered it, try finding a single core Opteron for sale in the FS/FT forum. They're steals if you ask me.

I haven't ordered the one from newegg yet, since OEMs are non returnable and I'm unsure if my old motherboard is still in working condition.

True, but you can always pick up a s939 mobo pretty bloody cheap! Cheaper than the CPUs that fit on them. My Opteron 180 with 8800GS SLI is used far, far more often than my 3ghz C2D btw. I still love my Oppy.
