I have a unused socket 939 MB sitting in my desk unopened. Its an AsRock VSTA. I was thinking about sticking a CPU in it and finally using it. I have another AsRock MB with a AMD X2 3800 so I wanted something better to stick in the VSTA and use it as my main machine and give my buddy my old motherboard and processor. However, I can't find any X2 cpus better than 4200. Just yesterday, Wednesday, Newegg had a Manchester 4600 on its site that was out of stock and now it is gone, it was like 90 bucks. What I really would like is a Toledo 4400 or 4800, that would be a nice upgrade however, I have only found them on one website for like 300-500 dollars. I guess I would be happy with just a 4600 Manchester but i can't find them any where. Anyone have any ideas?? I have look at all the online price comparing sites like Price Grabber and Price Watch. Is the 4200 going to be all I can get unless I go Opteron??

I know nothing about Opterons. I assume some of these are single core. I have a 3800 dual core right now. If I up grade, I want it to be cheap and a good boost. Thats why I wanted that Manchester 4600 Newegg had for sale till they took it off the site. Hard to argue with a $90 upgrade.

These are the model numbers for the Opterons my mother can use.

Opteron OSA185DAA6CD
Opteron OSA180DAA6CD
Opteron 175DAA6CD
Opteron 170DAA6CD
Opteron 165DAA6CD
Opteron 154DAA5BN
Opteron 152DAA5BN
Opteron 150DAA5BN
Opteron 148DAA5BN
Opteron 146DAA5BN

all opterons 16x++ are dual core. Everything else is single core. Opterons have 1mb of cache as opposed to 512k for many X2s.

single core a64's are plenty cheap now and would at least let you second board do something besides collect dust.

the opty/X2's are the end of the line for 939, i dont think it is even produced anymore right?

i had a single core a64 and just stepped up to a value intel rig, so i know your situation.

generally the clock advantage that the pricier chips can be made up by overclocking the X2 3800+. the extra cache that the opty offers is not worth the premium, and IMO none of the other dualcore 939's are worth the premium unless you are not overclocking.

I saw those Opterons at Newegg but they did appear on the list of recommended CPUs for that board. i didn't know if that would make the board unstable of not. God i wish Newegg hadn't run out of those $90 4600s

Have you tried Tiger Direct or Amazon.com? You may be able to find something on Ebay also. Just a couple of suggestions.

A bios upgrade may be all you need for those processors in your 939 socket mother board.

osa185daa6cd is the oem version of the opteron 185. osa185daa6cdbox is the retail boxed version of it.

the 4200+ is 2.2 ghz with 512 mb L2 per core. the opteron 185 is 2.6 ghz with 1mb L2 per core, so it will definitely be faster. the 185 is pretty expensive, though, you might want to look at a 180 or a 4800+.

They're not in production I think. I put my x2 4600+ 939 up on Ebay, right now it's sitting at $116 with 50 people tracking the auction still! I'm hoping I hit around $175, as it'll help me buy my new parts ;-)
