Anandtech had an article and mentioned the socket 939 3400+.

I'd want this processor because its socket 939 and will let me uprgrade in the future. I've checked price watch and it only has 3500+ socket 939 processor listed.

Will the 3400+ ever be released? If not how long till the 3500+ reaches the 200 buck range?

that 3400 was sempron processor. dunno if you really wnat that. its not a true 64bit processor. the 3500 I dont see hitting the 200 mark for a LONG time. thats about a 200 dollar decrease in price. that would also mean the 754s would be around 100bucks or under. 300 will probably be more seeable maybe around the new year or so im hoping.

the 939 3400+ was the first to come out.....its called the 3500+. the 3500+ is the 3400+, except when put into socket 939, the system becomes faster, therefore adding a 100+ MHz-like speed to it. the 3700+ becomes the 3800 and so on. to make a socket 939 3400+, amd would have to make a socket 754 3300+. the only difference in performance between the cpu's are because of the difference in sockets.

And I guess I can assume thatr AMD won't try to do that. Too bad AMD doesnt want to try to push the conversion to socket 939. Guess I'll be waiting a little while on computer upgrades.

oh dont worry, amd is trying to push the conversion to socket 939. once they ship out the semprons and 90nm, expect some more socket 939 cpus, like the 3300+, 3100+, 2900+, etc. until then, there is no problem at at with socket 754 as their lower end athlon 64's. its not that easy to convert to another socket, especially since its been done is such a little amount of time.

Chances are that by the time you need to upgrade your motherboard and your cpu (1+ years from now), you'll end up buying a new motherboard. This is especially true for AMD since nforce 4 which support PCI-E will come out later on and if you intend to play any games in the future you'll need to switch to PCI-E compliant platform at one point in time or another. Socket 939 will not save you because it doesnt support this video slot at this point in time with nforce 3 250 or via k8t800pro. What this means is that you'll probably replace the current socket 939 motherboard now anyways.

So, since A64 3400+ performs JUST as fast and sometimes faster than 3500+ and dual channel only gives roughly 3% improvement, and costs more for both mobo and the cpu, you might as well get socket 754 motherboard like chaintech vnf3-250 or epox for $80-100 and A64 3400+ 512kb newcastle @ 2.4ghz for $285. The cpu alone will save you almost $100 towards your new upgrade (ie. nforce 4 mobo)

I'm guessing a 3300+, 939-pin Athlon64 will be released in some three months' time, around the $250 range, probably with a 4000+ 939-pin Athlon64 costing above $800. I don't think the 3500+ will come down in price though, so if you want a 3500+, you'd be better off buying it today and enjoying it for more time.

The 3500+ will probably get cheaper around January/February, but if you can wait that long, then better wait for NForce4 motherboards, with PCI-Express slots. Personally, I won't wait that long. The 3500+ is the chip for me.

You don't have to guess, the A64 3300+ is on the AMD roadmap for Q4 of this year.

I wouldn't expect the price of the 3500 to fall much. In fact, it has gone up about $20.00 over the last two weeks I think. The demand is pretty high for them since it is the least expensive 939 chip currently available.

The $350-370 range is just expensive enough to be a viable upgrade option without breaking the pocketbook for most people. So why would AMD lower the price at this point? ;)
