Is the intel pentium 4 socket 775 platform considered by many folks around here as something to be avoided?

I think the problem is not with the platform but the chipsets intel uses. The 915 and 925 jst don;t really offer much over the 875/865 but require you to use DDR2 that cost more and doe snot add any performance.

But there are soem 775 boards that use the 875/865 chipset and also some by VIA and SiS.

So 775 = ok
915/925 chipsets - mehhh...

YES. VERY HOT AND EXPENSIVE CPUs, The 5xx serie, not so expensive but very hot, the 6xx series a little less hotter but very expensive with no performance increase. And also slower than A64, except by a little margin in encoding and a few intel optimized apps.

Yea its getting knee deep in here ;)
even if he is running that fast,it is useless to me if it can't do it 24/7/365.

Agreed
I can get my dual Xeons to run at 2.7 maybe 2.8Ghz each, but only long enough to get into windows and have it lock up.
But at 2.6Ghz is 100% stable :)

I am still looking hard@overclocked Xeons, just waiting to see if a new nV based server board will let me jack up these 242 CGs I have now. MichaelD and a couple you other guys get me antsy ;)

Yea if I had the money I would be rocking a pair of 242's with a nV server. SHOULD have a pci lock, but depends on the board maker and if you got the cash. No cash = 2 Xeons for me. Of course I am selling mine ;)

It is possible that Kensai is running stable @ 5.4GHz with a VapoChill or Prommie.

There is a guy Here running his 3.8 @ 5.2GHz on a VapoChill LS...

And This review had a 3.6 running stable @ 4.4GHz on watercooling....

I still would like to see some stability screenies from Kensai though.. ;)

Since nobody mentioned it . . . isn't the pin layout on LGA775 rather, uh, irritating to use? I'd be sweating bullets trying to install one of those things.

The pins on the motherboard seem to be a lot more fragile, than the pins that are on cpu's such as socket 478 etc, and some of the LGA775 prescotts run really hot no matter what ya do to them. I've had 3 prescotts, a SKT478 2.8@3.5ghz that got up to 63c under load with a thermalright SP-94, a 3.2ghz ES LGA775 @3.6ghz, that runs at 58c with a thermaltake jungle 512, and my horrid 3.4ghz LGA775 prescott that was getting up to 72c with a thermalright XP-120, and throttling. It's now running at 3.91ghz with water cooling, and still gets over 50c under load.

But teh Athalon 63 has more pins so it muhst hve better

Prescott is just waaaaaaaaay too hot for my blood. I honestly believe the 3.2+ gig chips should not even have been released, they are just too hot under full load.

With the great difference that my CPU 100% stable 7/24/365, and I am not usin liquid nitorgen cooling system(which is VERY expensive, also the CPU is), My CPU is air cooled (Wich is very cheap).
