Socket 754 - Will a Turion64 work on my MSI K85-Neo

Actually, MSI does say the Turion 64 will work in their still selling K8T-NeoV but for my older K8T-Neo FIS2R, it isn't listed. The two boards have exactly the same chipset, but the NeoV is smaller. I'd like to replace my AMD64 3000+ with something faster and perhaps cooler. There is an AMD64 3700+ that should work, but I'm wondering if anyone has successfuly installed a Turion into my motherboard.

yep, that good ol table i remember it well when i chose my turion for my dfi 250gb board. works fine for me and the fan will only spin when at full load 🙂
 
BBA, did your replacement Turion have a heat spreader or was it the bare silicon (flip chip) style?
My current AMD64 3000+ has the large heat spreader on it and my heatsink may work best on that design.
 
I see that now, looking at several sites. I'm getting discouraged looking at the rather low success rates when putting the Turion ML44 on desktop motherboards. Thanks for your response.
 
Many many motherboards actually work quite well with Turions. MSI just takes the time to actually advertise it. Its the heatsink thats the problem. Without an IHS, a bolt-down style heatsink (Big Typhoon, Zalman 7x00 series) will be needed or you'll have to mod the retention bracket.
 
what is the advantage of using a Turion over a Athlon 64?

According to the chart my mobo (GA-K8NS PRO) is supported, I have a 3000+ venice running at 2.87ghz...would there be any advantage of getting a Turion?

Purely in a wattage aspect. In HTPCs they word well. With their 25 (Super Efficient single core Turions) or 35 (Normal Turions and Turion X2) watt TDPs, a tiny cooler can cool it effectively, and you can run it passively with Heatsinks like the THermalright HR-01. Though also realise the AMD X2 3800+ for socket AM2 also has the same 35 watt TDP if you can find an SFF version.

The sacrifice is overclocks. Turions use slower transistors for their lower wattage. They dont overclock that well out all but for their purpose you aren't really supposed to 😛

EDIT: Let me also mention that for you, there really is no good Turion. The highest Turion (ML-44) is 35 watts and only clocks at 2.4Ghz. The SFF X2 3800+ is rare and price bloated at around $430! :Q The TL-60 is the highest dual core in the Turion line clocking at 2Ghz and is $315.

In conclusion, unless power usage is of utmost concern to you, there is noooooooooooo point to these.
