Socket 754, and PCI x16

I have searched high and low on Google, e-mailed VIA, and SiS, but I still have no clue, will the Athlon 64 processors that are socket 754 be PCIx16 supported?

Here's some info that might help answer the question: XBit Labs interviews VIA dude and VIA has PCI-E southbridges in the works that would work on not only an Athlon64 chipset, but an AthlonXP chipset, since mobo makers can mix & match VIA northbridges & southbridges.

Here's a SiS roadmap for 2004: XBit Labs again It looks like they'll have their single-chip 761 "chipset" for Socket 754, supporting PEG x16 as well as separate southbridges that have PCI-E support.

If Tech Report has their story straight, nForce3 250-series chipsets (which support Socket 754) won't offer PCI-E support: read the last paragraph on this page.

Hope that helps 🙂

So if I bought an Athlon 64 3000+ now, I could swap mobos later on and be able to have a PEG x16 expansion option?

It looks like it to me, yeah. But my Magic 8-Ball is broken, so I can't be entirely sure 🙁 (meaning, the mobo makers have to actually build the boards, it's not enough for the chips and chipsets to be available. Point in case: SiS755).

Bigger picture: you can always sell off your entire Socket754 kit and move up to 939, it's not like you're marrying it or something 😀

We already signed our pre-nup tho 😉

Yes eventually later, but not right away. 939 will ahve support first. I wouldnt be so quick to adopt PEG though. Particularly considering the first gen PEG cards will also have AGP counterparts (R420, NV40)

Will there be any hybrid boards with both PCI-E x16 and AGP? would make upgrading a lot less painful at once. . .

Possible, but very unlikely. You *might* see boards with dual PCI-E x16 (since it needs relatively few traces on the MB), but I think you'd have a tough time cramming both slots on there (plus it would drive the cost WAY up, as you'd need controllers for both).

I want a board with maybe 3 pci-e x16 slots. Or one x16 and two x8. I'm thinking of building a triple monitor setup near the end of the year, and as long as I can have all this dedicated bandwidth for each card, I might as well use it.

So if i'm thinking about getting a socket 754 now, I should just do it and get a PCI-E mobo later on? I need some confirmation here, because the vibe im feelin is that its never going to be a good time to buy because SO many new technologies are comming out. PCI-E, DDRII, A possible NEW amd socket configuration for DDRII, BTX, yunno, so I dunno 😉, VERY confused! And an Athlon 64 3000+ for 223 dollars doesn't look like that bad a deal right about now 🙂
