Socket 754 and AM2 cooler the same?

I just bought a new AM2 chip and I didn't realize it didn't come with a stock cooler, the system I'm replacing is a Socket 754, will that cooler work with the AM2 socket?

Well first we need to know what cooler. But I am going to have to say no, just because it allot older than the AM2 socket. But it may work if the cooler is new.

What CPU is it that you got? The stock coolers from 754, 939, and AM2 all clip on the same spot so they'll all fit. But if you got an X2 6400+ don't expect to keep it cool with a sempron heatsink 😉

Yes, it will fit just fine. The stock retail box coolers clip onto the center lug, which is the same for sockets 754, 939, 940 and AM2.

I bought the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition

I just recently purchased the X2 6000+ AM2 and the cooler is different from the one I had on my X2 3800+ 939.

The new cooler has copper heatpipes, so I'm assuming cooling requirements are a little higher. I would seriously consider maybe getting something a little better.
