socket 754 3000+ to core 2 duo "upgrade"

Upgrading my current system because recent demo and beta games i've tried have been unplayable. My last system was based around a new chip at the time the athlon 64 3000+ and an ATI 9700 pro. I chose these by studying AT benchmarks and these parts served me well for a long period. Been out of the loop since then, but have spent the last couple days researching new hardware.

CURRENT BOX:
going into the closet:
AMD 3000+ socket 754
NVIDIA 6800
2x256 for total 512 ddr ram
2 IDE optical drives
350W Enermax whisper EG365P-VE
keeping for new system:
Creative Sound blaster x-fi xtreme music
320 IDE PATA HDD
400 IDE PATA HDD
2 old crt's, one from the trash, one used one i got for $25 (will have to get lcd eventually but can hold out for now)
case: chieftec (in black)
creative 2.1 speakers
keyboard & mouse

NEW PARTS:
$114.50:Core 2 Duo E4300
$99.99:GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 1.3)
$169.98: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AA1065 - Retail (already ordered because tempted by a $85 rebate) newegg link is gone or has changed now
$199.99:BFG GeForce 7950GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 OC
$104.95 after $10.45 shipping:CORSAIR 520W Power Supply
$44.98SAMSUNG SATA DVD/CD burner OEM + 25 lightscribe cds
------
$7.43 shipping on all the egg parts
$-135 mail in rebates (Crucial mem $85, BFG video $40, Corsair psu $10)
------
606.82 grand total (after shipping + rebates)

---------------------------------------------
Chose the mobo because i had 3 mobos with my current system and while all were quirky, the popular models were easier to troubleshoot because other people on various forums had already posted the same issues i ran into, so i chose just what seems to be a popular board so when i run into problems i won't be alone.

Chose the high end power supply because it looks good with modular cables (my case has a window) and because the last psu i bought was the first modular psu the ultra 500w i think it was and it was a piece of junk that i ended up throwing away, this one seems top of the line so i doubt i will have to junk it.

The memory was in impulse buy, i checked the gigabyte ds3 website and it doesn't list crucial as being compatible, also it is 2.2v which i think is bad, i have my fingers crossed that it will work with the DS3.

hmm the evga 8800 gts 320 meg is really tempting, but if I get it i really don't have a budget system anymore which is what i set out to build.

well you want to play games, thats why your upgrading...so add the extra 90 or so and get the better card.

well thats what i saw anyway..."Upgrading my current system because recent demo and beta games i've tried have been unplayable"

What Heen said. Other stuff looks good. Sell your old parts instead of putting them "in the closet" unless its going to be doing something in there.

crucial ballistic was $85 for 2 x 1 gb yesterday. That is a great deal. They don't have those up on new egg anymore. They still have the tracers at the same settings, but they are $139.99 after the $85 mail in rebate. I knew that I should have bought it yesterday but I hadn't shopped enough yet. It ended up working out for the best, however, since seeing how cheap 2gb of high-end ddr2 was convinced me to upgrade my mobo and proc (to Q6600) instead of just getting an opteron for my gaming rig. Now I'm getting an opteron/x2 toledo for my file server. Why would I want to upgrade my file server from a 3700 + to an opteron 175 or x2 4400? Because I need to get higher DC scores, of course.

If you haven't already bought you might want to consider a p35 mobo. I have heard that very few 965 mobos will be compatible with penryn for a potential future cpu upgrade.

Or, you can build a file server so your wife can fill up a 500 gb hard drive with baby pics in no time flat!

Check this board out.

Damn! That's a REAL close cousin to the DQ6. Same EXACT chipsets/bus speed for both. In fact it looks like the only real differences are a little better support for DDR 1066, an extra PCIe x16 slot, and a Firewire port on the DQ6 vs an extra legacy PCI slot and no Firewire on the DS3R.

Oh yeah, and the DS3R is about $110.00 South of the DQ6.

$140.00- Hmmm, seems reasonable for a decent P35 board.😎

I just had my friend go with this setup:
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=6591608&WishListTitle=Robert%27s+Computer">https://secure.newegg.com/N......obert%27s+Computer</a> (add in your gcard)
because that 4600+ is better than the e4300 stock. (http://xbitlabs.com/articles/c...uo-e6420_7.html#sect0)

Plus when barcelona comes out + applications finally become threaded, each chip having a dedicated HyperTransport2/3 bus to all the others is going to make a big difference where it counts.
