Socket 604 (Xeon) heatsink/fan

I'm looking to build a workstation with 2 604 sockets. Has anyone built something similar using the stock Intel heatsink/fan? I have seen them for around $15, but not sure on the noise. Does it sound like a jet engine taking off? I saw another brand heatsink/fan on newegg going for about $28 shipped that is 38dB, which seemed a little too high. Thanks!

The Windtunnels are very efficient, but the 60mm fans that are included are very loud. They have two mounting methods depending on your layout (above or through)

Edit - but, the retention clips are a frigging nuisance.

ummm i hate to be the first one to say it, but there will be many after me....

unless you have the processors already, or the mobo....just get an x2 or opteron

Heh. If you think $28 shipped is too high, Xeons are not for you.

I paid $40/pc for my CoolerMaster heatpipe heatsinks, and had to add my own fans.

If you do seriously go down this road, remember that Prestonia boards use a different HSF mounting arrangement than Nocona boards do. They are not interchangable.

I already have the parts, now I'm looking for quiet! It seems that Coolermaster heatpipe setup might be the way to go.

Remember that even though they are passive heatsinks, they do require airflow through them. They're designed for rackmount applications, where there is a ton of airflow.

I attached an 80mm fan to each HS, using garbage ties. Not overly loud, as they're low airflow/RPM fans, but it's enough to keep the temps in the 40oC range.
