I read this in www.amdzone.com:

"Socket 563
Reported by: Chris Tom At: 11:28 AM Source: e-mail
Arjen let me know that PC Watch Japan has posted up their Platform Conference coverage which includes details about the new AMD Socket 563.
Size of the mu PGA package with the 33×33mm, 1,089 squares ago mm as a base product. Because of this, it becomes small-sized than the mu FCPGA and the mu FCBGA of the Intel. Also thickness is improved largely, thickness of the socket itself becomes the 2.8mm, with mu PGA + Socket 563 the 4.74mm becomes thin vis-a-vis the low-profile Socket462 + CPGA being the 6.44mm. Because of this, 1 Tsuga of the hurdle in order as for the kind of anxiety which the aforementioned engineer talked the possibility of being improved is high, to adopt Athlon 4 for the Japanese manufacturer the fact that it is gone is meant.

They also show a picture of the smaller 30mmX30mm CPU." ( http://www.amdzone.com/#1 )

Since a friend of mine wants to buy a new AMD based PC, should I tell him to wait for the new Athlons, or is this "Socket 563" sci-fi for the moment?

Don't wait. This socket is only for Mobile applications, there is no desktop Socket 563 coming. Don't worry, just build a nice AXP now.
