Ok a guy brought a laptop barebone in to me at my store.. he said he needed cpu, hard drive and memory.. took a look at it no prob gave him price quote he said ok.. only problem is, I ASSUMED which i shouldnt have it was socket 478,, but in fact the socket said 479, i was like well ok so i started looking for cpu s with no luck finding them... so my question is, Can i use a 478 cpu pentium m centrino with it.. will that work or will it have to be 479... where only talking about 1 pin not being used but i havent had much dealings with it. can anyone help...

There's a reason why its actually a different socket :X No, you need to buy a s479 pentium m. Or a core duo / solo , I think they are s479.

Well that will be easier to answer if you know what chipset the motherboard had. But basicly socket 478 and socket 479 pentium-m's are compatible, but you have to be sure it's a pentium-m motherboard, and not a mobile pentium 4 motherboard.

Yes it is absolutely backwards compatible, All you need to do is have a little soldering skills. because u need to attach an extra capcitor to the mother board to handle the increased power
