Socket 478 and PCI Express x16...

Senior member
I have a socket 478 Prescott and decent motherboard, however I feel the need to update my gfx from AGP to Express x16

However, there are only two (that i could find) motherboards that support 478 and x16 Express, why is this?

I really dont want this motherboard because it doesnt have raid or Gigabit Ethernet, and its not really a solid manufacturer.

anyone know why there isn't a decent ASUS/aopen/etc. 478 + x16 board? Is the socket that old that its being phased out?

nvidia 5700 Ultra,

my plan WAS to hold on to my 478 2.8 GHz Prescott + 1GB PC3200 + HDDs, and simply upgrade my mobo to x16 with a 7800GT.

Now it looks like I will have to upgrade to 939 or 775...

I use Photoshop and do some gaming, BF2 was 800x600 all lowest settings...

i hear you, as you can see i have the same setup except the video card as you, which i just happend to get in on the ati deal. i too was p!ssed that nvidia is not making a agp version of the 7800 series, which it could because it doesn't use the bandwidth that a agp 8x slot has. i know that a epox nvidia nf4 ultra board and a64 3000venice would be a nice, reasonable way to go, and the 3000venices seem to have a lot of o/c ability in them.

Well, a 7800GT would be held back by your processor anyway, why not rather get a AGP 6600GT or even a 6800 somethin, and with all that money you saved from not having to get a a new mobo too, buy something else like more RAM or a better/fancier mouse or a nice leather chair for your PC desk.

is this response some kind of a f*cking joke?

a 7800gt would not be held back by a 2.8 P4, sorry, you are wrong. don't be a slave to a brand, ignorant a$$.

:Q 🙁

I would have said the same thing if the guy had a A64 2800+, the system would not really be balanced overall.

even with a a64 2800+ he would really not be cpu limited on bf2...so i snapped at you...

Who made you uber master of these forums that has the only opinion that is worth anything?

I'm just trying to help the guy in my way, to make his life more pleasant and happier. While you are are a judgemental close minded person, that assumes (<-- you know what they say about that) stuff about me. So what if I made a few AMD pro lines in the Hector Ruiz thread thats in my signature, it was made for fun.

While you on the other hand say "don't be a slave to a brand, ignorant a$$." and in your signature "(OCZ = best Tech/RMA Support, only ram i will ever buy!!)". Do you know what that is called?

Anyway, more RAM would help with the photoshopping he does and BF2 (I think) while a 6600GT is a vast improvement over a 5700.

switch to decaf and/or paxil before you post again.

the OP did not say that BF2 is the only game he plays, others are CPU limited with a 2.8 or 2800+.

For most other games a 6600GT or 6800 offers much, much better price/performance paired with a 2.8.

like this is not meant to be a d!ck?

(OCZ = best Tech/RMA Support, only ram i will ever buy!!)
i have tried just about every other brand out there and, well OCZ does have the best tech support followed by mushkin. i am not the only one that feels this way. call ocz tech and tell me how they treat you.

first, i apologized for snapping at you but the "get a fancier chair" statement is rude. my opinion is by far not the most important one on here and i never said it was

what games are limited by a 2800+ or 2.8? most games are gpu limited, not cpu. i am sure i could put my x800xtpe in my xp2000 box and run bf2 on it fine.
