??

Going from 4GB to 8GB will certainly help your system to last into the future as well. Obviously, I'm leaving room for upgrades in the future. If not, I would have gone Core i7 Extreme with 24GB of RAM and a couple of HD 4870 X2s with a 1500W PSU and a few very fast SSDs.

Ya know, if ya think about it, I'm really only losing out when it comes to the memory. The Core i7 920 is worth it's price (compare to similar clocked C2Qs) and the mobo is comparable to a mid-high end mobo for C2D, and will be better priced in the future. All other components would be the same. It's just the RAM that costs way too much ($47 for 2GB DDR3 as opposed to $20 for 2GB DDR2)

Actually, there's a combo deal with the MSI X58 Platinum and the Core i7 920, so shave another $35 off that total price for my Core i7 setup. For a grand total of $930. Now you can go ahead and throw in the extra 1GB of memory. Is that better cmdrdredd?

Why not go for the triple channel 6GB kits? You're already spending near $1k and I'm sure you could save up some extra cash between now and then.

Maybe I will :)

Wait... you're not going to tell me to just forget about i7 and go Core 2 instead?

I'm saying, if you're going to spend that much anyway go all the way.

Pretty much what I just did. Went with the EVGA mobo and 920. Was going to get 4G RAM, had the triple channel internal debate, and ponied up for a 6G kit. I'm on a AMD 939 3700+ at 2.8G at the moment. Think I'll notice the difference?:D

EDIT: I've discovered the longest unit of time known to man: the interval between hitting "submit order" on newegg to the time when it actually arrives. I'm hoping for monday.

LGA1160 will not be out for awhile and LGA1366 will not come down in price unless something competitive hits the scene. It looks like both these new sockets will last quite abit since changing sockets too much can cause quite the negative stir amongst consumers and in the market. I guess LGA775 lasted quite the time, squeezing every last bit of the FSB based architectures but people need to understand that due to different power circuitry requirements, a penryn isnt going to work with a LGA 775 board >2 years ago.

Id say LGA1366 is the way to go.

On a side note have you thought about say AM3/AM2+ being another viable option? socket AM3 processors will support both DDR2 and DDR3 meaning that these future chips can be still used on a socket AM2+ motherboard.

I'm on Socket A Athlon XP 3000+ at 2.0GHz! Think I'll notice the difference? :D

I always was an AMD fan, but since Core 2 Duo, I pretty much haven't thought about them. Phenoms still suck in my opinion (pardon the harsh wording, I can't think of anything better atm) and I don't have much faith in Phenom II being much better. At least I really don't think it'll have the overclocking potential of C2D or i7. By the way, when will Phenom II be launching?

I think in the next two months. We could possibly see the AM2+ versions first then later in Q109 the AM3 versions (these have a TDP of 95W and support both DDR2/3).

1366 is going to be around along time. Intel was planing on Having 1366 socket For the unsinkable Itanic. . If thats true . Socket 1366 should outlive all other intel past sockets.

I like the OPs feb build date. By than there will be M/B with the hydra chip on board. If its all its cracked up to be. Thats something he will be looking at hard. The 920 should be selling for $284 by than. To bad Op can't wait till Spring IDF. With Nehalem out on the market. Leaves lots of time for us to see larrabee in action . Maybe even running project offset;). Off course the big deal will be the Atom setup . But thats life. Also 1160 should be hot topic. I wonder what these cpus will sell for . I bet no more than $234 for the top model.
