Yes, socket 1156 has the exact same mounting as socket 1155.

Sandy Bridge CPUs don't run very hot, so you can probably get away with mid-range coolers like the Cooler Master TX3. Think of the 212+ but with only 3 heatpipes and sized for a 92mm fan instead of 120mm fan. Oh yeah, and cheaper too. Only thing is (for those who abhor it) it uses the normal push pins for mounting.

I might go with that recommendation. The stock fan that came with my i5 2400 is very loud compared to the stock fan I had when running my Q6600.

Could try the Corsair H50 or H60 Hydro Cooler if it will fit. Personally I'd go with the H60 since its an improved version of the H50 in most regards. Better performance and less noise. It uses the traditional mount and screw down type of attachment. Has to be less aggravation than the push down and turn lock system the H50 uses. A PIA procedure in my opinion. I know because I just installed one today in a new build. /chuckle

The fan is loud at full speed. and full load. You really want to enable Smart Fan, even with the aftermarket cooler.

the stock fan, or the cooler master is loud? I think you mean the stock but just want to be sure. as for smart fan, I've looked through bios but I can't find any cpu fan settings. Smart fan is a bios thing right?

Yes, Smart Fan is in BIOS. That's the generic term, but some companies call it different things. For instance the Asus UEFI calls it "CPU Q-Fan Control" and it is located in the monitoring section.

Yes, I consider the stock Cooler Master 212+ fan to be loud at full RPM. Terms like "loud" and "quiet" are relative and subjective.

hmm gotcha. I need to look more closely at bios I guess.

maybe the 212 with a different fan? sandy bridge run pretty cool so I'm sure most coolers would be sufficient, so noise is what I want to eliminate. I'd also prefer to buy at tigerdirect, hopefully in the $30 range

perhaps Thermaltake Silent 1156 CPU Cooler?

I would tend to agree with this one. It definitely isn't quiet at full blast.
