When otters swim around Point Conception (near me) & south, the otter-police catch them around Santa Barbara.

I'm not sure what becomes of those little guys, but I suspect they might be killed. The urchin & abalone divers around here hate the otters.

Maybe you know about the failed-miserably federal otter relocation program?

A few years ago the Feds took a bunch of otters to live at the Channel Islands, as a survival population to continue the species in case oil spills or whatever may ever kill the other colonies along the Calif. coast.

The transplanted otters disappeared (probably mostly as snacks for the Orca & great whites) and a few were found back at their points of origin. Those little guys swam home (a real long swim).

Just in case you or anybody else is interested, here's some info on that. I realize it's probably a lot more info than casual readers want, but it may be of interest to biology & environmental studies students:

Federal experiment to relocate sea otters to remote island fails

the Commercial Fishermen of Santa Barbara (CFSB) filed a lawsuit to force the U.S. Fish and WildlifeService (FWS) to remove sea otters from the area south of Point Conception ? the so-called ?no otter zone.? (in mid-page)

the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to end the California sea otter relocation program, which starting in 1987 moved 140 Southern sea otters to a separate colony on San Nicolas Island in the Channel Islands and established a no-otter zone extending from Point Conception to Mexico.

They swim along in, and just outside, the surf zone along my local area. Cute little guys.

I was actually thinking that it would be a brown sock with buttons for eyes, thread for whiskers, and a thimble for a nose. I was about set to have my heart melted, you rat bastard.
