Sociology degree?

Yeah, I know. Let me splain'

I have a background in geographic information systems and would like to use my skills in this field to move into more of a demographic analysis type career. Demography is interesting to me because you study populations in-depth and do a ton of data manipulation and statistical analysis. I'm currently majoring in Public Administration but am starting to hate it. The political/law side of it is wearing me out... I just have no interest in it anymore. I loved the introductory courses but have completely lost interest as far as the public budgeting, legislative process, etc. I think I may switch to Sociology and use my public aministration classes as electives to support it. As for graduate school, I'm planning on an MS in Computer Information Systems to further enhance my skills as a "data mechanic".

I don't want to get a useless degree or anything, but I just can't deny my interest in sociology. I look at the degree plan and every single course looks like loads of fun. I'd rather do something I enjoy than something I hate, regardless of what my future job prospects are. Keep in mind that I've worked in local government for 8-years, so I'm not exactly going to come out of college with a sociology degree and zero experience. I'm looking more for career enhancement and a way to open the door to graduate school.

Sociology degree = jobless (unless its a PHD with a minor in something usefull).

I think that with the experience that you already have and the plans that you have to further your education even more (with graduate school), sociology sounds like a good thing. I can see it working well with your GIS experience.

I got a Sociology degree. Since this was an easy degree to get, had plenty of time on my hands. I trained up during my 4 years getting the degree in network and system administration and got myself a real job out of college unlike all my other liberal art friends.

Not offered at my school, though I do have a certificate in GIS from another university (16 hours of courses).

Sociology is a really fun major! Don't kid yourself, the courses can get very tough when you get into Marx, etc. If you plan on business after school or grad school like law or MBA, the degree is fine. I should know as I co-majored in it and attended a Top 3 biz sko0l.

It's sounding like Sociology is a great major if you already have plans to go to graduate school (which I definitely am), but not a good major if you don't plan on going past a bachelor's degree.
