what class do you consider yourself in and why? in terms of the historical understanding of class, why is class such an important category today in society/politics? i've always been in the working class and think that it sucks to always fall below the upper class people.

It is an important topic in politics because political policy has an effect on real life, all people.
The focus is placed on the working/middle class as the upper class can survive without any government regualtion or intervention and represent a very small percentage of the population.
With healthcare costs rising, and the drive for companies to perform becomes greater, companies will try to reduce benifits, services, wages to maximize profits. This in turn will have a very negative effect on most people (working class). Both liberals and conservatives fight to prove to this class that they know what is best. Republicans think privatizing and reducing control will generate competition and drive costs down allowing more people to pay. Democrats think regulation and control is the only way to limit inflating costs of these services.
It does suck to fall short of the upper class, but you as an individual need to decide how you will be better off. If you think government can work for you and regulate companies or offer services you cannot afford, so be it. If you think government is restricting your drive to succeed and you think tax reductions will significantly help you and your company in raising your standard of living to afford these services, so be it.
This is why i think class is important, the drastic difference in oppinion on how to help the least well off in the country.

I have just graduated university, so i am unemployed. During summers i was a labourer in the working class. My family is upper-middle class. Household income of ~$250k cad or so?

As far as my socio-economic group I would have to say homeless and burned out of my home with no cares while we look for new place and jobs here, and loving it for the time being...A NYC hostel life is pretty damn fun.

not taking into account any financial support I get from my parents, probably lower middle class. I make 35K/year and don't really worry about money all that much, but the cost of living in my area is expensive and if I didn't have a roommate, I'd be in a much tighter financial situation.
