This job application I'm filling out wants my social security number. Since I'm paranoid giving it out, is it ok to put "available upon request" or would that turn them off into hiring me?

You really must be paranoid if you don't want to put it on a job application.

Where are you applying, Enron?

They run a background check on you. Good luck trying to land a job without giving your SSN up.

The store I used to work at left job applications out in the open in the breakroom/office. It would have been easy for a dishonest employee to copy information off of it.

With that said, I don't see anything wrong with putting "available upon request".

They run a credit check on you and need your ssn for that, also, if you're hired, they need it for taxes!

I don't think will run a background check on you until they interview you so make it available to them if you get an interview.
I would say the same for references

Give them that reason, not of course towards their company :)

What kinda job is it? If it's some lame job like fast food, just leave it blank and act like you forgot to fill it out.

If it's a professional company though, chances are they handle apps professionally.

I understand that it is required by them but why do they need it right away before they interview you? Personally, I think you should be able to hold off on giving it to them until they decide to interview or even hire you.

reminiscent of the mark of the beast, no? Without a SSN/tax ID # you can't get a job in any country *legally*. Therefore, you can't earn any money and if you don't have any money you can't buy or sell. hmmmmmm........

The Mark of the Beast can't be the SSN, Flyer... even Christ had to register for a census and pay income taxes. No, it seems to that it has to be something else entirely. Something completely evil and completely voluntary at the same time. I personally think that it's just money overall, the worship of mammon, and the marks being its influence on the labor of both hand and mind.

He's not hired there yet and how many hands will that application pass through? I go with being paranoid.

Then again if he is applying for a job, it probably means he's got no jack to begin with.

Not to mention they need it for all those federal documents for tax's and benefits. With 300,000,000 million in a nation, they go by your SSN number, not Name, for accuracy. And like others said, background checks and to make sure you are in the county legally or an American citizen.

If you were spending money to interview and or do background checks, wouldn't you want to weed out all illegals before spending the money on doing that? I would, so I'd toss out that application immediately. It needs to be there before the company puts so much resources into interviewing.

But why are you being so paranoid anyways? With just a few bucks anyone can buy your SS number - it isn't like stealing is any easier.

Is this some type of job you found on Monster and they email you an application to fill out or is this some company you visited and got an application? If it's something where you are emailed an app that tell them you'll bring all that information with you if you get an interview.
