Social norms

Ok, I'm doing some research that involves social norms. I thought that it might be fun, and beneficial to me, for you guys (and girls) to tell of situations where you have broken social norms and the response of witnesses. List some using the following format, and TIA for the help.

Gender:
Age:
Social norm broken and response:

EDIT: A social norm is simply an expected form of behavior in a given situation.

a popular one to break is to get in an elevator and face the back wall. the norm is to face the doors.

I've had that one submitted at least 20 times.

And a social norm is simply an expected form of behavior in a given situation.

My psych teacher told us about an assignment he used to give out like this. One example was when a guy would ask if he could go ahead of someone in a photocopy line in the library holding just a single sheet of paper (like he was only inteneding to photocopy one piece of paper). And then if they said yes he would pull out a stack of 50+ papers and start photocopying.

He eventually got punched out by some guy and that is why our teacher had to stop give out this assignment 😛.

As long as you give an excuse (no matter what the excuse) for needing to go in front, your chance of a successful line cut goes up dramatically!

😛

Winnar!

I read a story here a while ago about that. I think the poster was in a Sociology class and they had to go out and do some experiements on social norms. His very clever idea was to go to a supermarket and while doing his own shopping, would take items from other people's carts and put them in his own, and do it right in front of the other shopper so he could get their reactions.

I can just imagine that - be next to someone else in an aisle, look at your own shopping list, look in their cart, take something out of their cart, and scratch it off your list.

Hilarity ensues!

One I got on a crowded tram, and most seats were taken, so I sat in the seat reserved for "disabled"people. A pregnant woman got on at the next stop, and was standing in front of me (but I didn't notice her/ realize she was pregnant). After a few minutes, this elderly woman sitting near me exploded in rage, and demanded to know why I wasn't offering my seat to the pregnant woman in front of me. I basically said, "I didn't see her, but why the fvck didn't YOU offer YOUR seat to the pregnant lady?" The old lady said: "I'm OLD!" as if that explained everything. I said "You look healthy enough to me, LADY!!" She was speechless with indignation. I guess her expectation was that:
1) people should stand and offer their seat to pregnant ladies
2) men and young people should stand, old females can remain seated.

That seems reasonable to me. You didn't see things that way?

Sounds reasonable to me too. Then again, according to aidanjm, pregnant women = heterosexuals and we know how we feels about those types of people.
