... ever use a social networking site that was simple in looks, simple to use, and didn't have any of the "fluff"? An easy way to keep contacts in line, perhaps send them a few messages, etc.?

Yes. But would enough of my friends join it? Probably not.
Which is why I just use Gmail for this. Everyone I know has it, plus it doubles as a simple IM client and archives conversations.

Facebook, probably when they opened it up to everyone, suddenly exploded into the new MySpace.

But imagine a site that DIDN'T allow it to become that? Because if programmers don't program something into a site, it can't become that 🙂

Programmers that aren't greedy and promise not to add features to cater to everyone including kids, and promise not to add annoying ads and crap all over their sites all while maintaining enough revenue to keep the site open? Sign me up!
