I'm surprised these guys aren't dying more often.

A famous Chinese "rooftopping" enthusiast has unwittingly filmed his own death as he fell from a 62-story skyscraper during one of his trademark daredevil stunts.

Wu Yongning, 26, was performing pull-ups at the summit of the Huayuan Hua Center, one of the tallest buildings in Changsha, in central China, when he lost his grip and fell.

The incident was captured on a camera that Wu had carefully placed on another part of the building to record himself.

Supposedly he only fell 45 feet on to a terrace. That's pretty high but that's only like 4 story drop. People have survived far higher drop with only minor injuries. And it looks like he fell because he lost all his arm strength doing 3 pull-ups and his arm and grip gave out. If you can't do even 3 pull-ups with all the adrenaline, that's pretty sad. I don't want to say this is publicity hoax and the guy is not dead, but it could very well be.

It's entirely possible to drown in a puddle, too. It's not the distance of the fall, but the manner of your landing.

I find the 45 feet thing to be a letdown. If you're going to kill yourself doing stupid shit on top of 50-100 story buildings then by god fall the entire distance. GO OUT BIG!! Anyone can fall 45 feet, that's not special, a 1000 foot pancake is memorable.

Anything more than fifteen feet only serves to provide an opportunity to contemplate one's future.

Calm down, get a grip now ... oh! this is an interesting sensation, what is it? It's a sort of ... yawning, tingling sensation in my ... my ... well I suppose I'd better start finding names for things if I want to make any headway in what for the sake of what I shall call an argument I shall call the world, so let's call it my stomach.

Good. Ooooh, it's getting quite strong. And hey, what's about this whistling roaring sound going past what I'm suddenly going to call my head? Perhaps I can call that ... wind! Is that a good name? It'll do ... perhaps I can find a better name for it later when I've found out what it's for. It must be something very important because there certainly seems to be a hell of a lot of it. Hey! What's this thing? This ... let's call it a tail - yeah, tail. Hey! I can can really thrash it about pretty good can't I? Wow! Wow! That feels great! Doesn't seem to achieve very much but I'll probably find out what it's for later on. Now - have I built up any coherent picture of things yet?

No.

Never mind, hey, this is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward to, I'm quite dizzy with anticipation ...

Or is it the wind?

There really is a lot of that now isn't it?

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground!

I wonder if it will be friends with me?

And the rest, after a sudden wet thud, was silence.

That building climbing stuff looks fun as hell, but I'd be too chicken to get caught, especially in some of those places where the penalty would probably be extremely severe. Also I'd probably want some kind of fall arrest setup... which I guess defeats the "extreme" part of doing this but I'm older and wiser now. :p I was a bit uneasy climbing on my shed roof not that long ago to install tar paper and that was only like 10 feet up - enough to break bones as there's not much snow on the ground right now. 30 degree roof pitch feels way steeper when you're actually on it and bare plywood is not all that grippy.

Could be that it took quite a bit of effort to get up there and into position beforehand, or he partied too hard the night before or whatever. Doesn't matter now, idiot thing to do no matter the outcome.

Still, if you can't even do 3 pull-ups at the time you have zero business hanging your ass off the side of a building.

His girlfriend said that he probably free climbed to get to the top:

The rooftopper’s girlfriend, named only as “Jinjin”, said Huayuan International Centre is only open to the public until the 44th floor, after which key cards are required to access the Grand Hyatt hotel. As security personnel were also present on the hotel’s top floor, she said she believes her boyfriend took a lift to “over 40 floors” and then free-climbed “nearly 20 more floors” to reach the position where he filmed.

We weren't there, can't assume what circumstances led that idiot to it.

As long has he does 43 backflips before landing I'm happy.
