For many years my dog had two simple rules for strangers:
1) If you were on the sidewalk or farther away you were bad and needed to be barked or growled at
2) If you were inside the house you were a friend who needed to be jumped on and licked
Yesterday a friend came by and stood on the porch while we were inside the house with the door open while we talked. My dog stayed inside and looked at the stranger, then the sidewalk, then the doorway into the house, then at us. Didn't bark, didn't growl, no tail wagging, no jumping. Just back and forth between those four things while she tried to figure out what fresh purgatory this stranger existed in
