Soccer question

How is the USA the #5 ranked FIFA soccer team? After what I've seen over the last two weeks I doubt they'd be the fifth best team in half the countries represented in the WC.

Can someone explain the ranking? Was FIFA just trying to con americans into watching soccer by giving our team an artifically high ranking, thus making us believe we had a shot, compelling us to watch in the hopes we'd get hooked on the sport and watch past the qualifying round? I don't get it.

There is no way USA is #5.

The ranking was crap. That ranking had Argentina at #9!

I'm guessing that there are a half dozen or more teams in EACH ONE of those countries that are better than the US team.
