Entire article:

BAGHDAD ? Victory celebrations at a soccer match in Iraq ended abruptly when a fan accidentally shot the victorious goalie to death, the police in Babil Province said Monday.

Two teams representing the Shiite villages of Sinjar and Enana, near Hillah, south of Baghdad, played a close-fought match on Saturday, with Sinjar winning 2-1. During victory celebrations, an off-duty policeman started firing his service pistol in the air but lost control of it, the police said. A bullet struck the Sinjar goalie, an 18-year-old high school senior named Mohammed Amin, in the head, killing him instantly. There was no indication of foul play; the policeman was himself a Sinjar fan.

The officer, Jawad Kadham, 28, was charged with recklessly discharging an official weapon and with negligent homicide, and is still in custody. The family of the goalie was demanding so-called blood money from the policeman, the police said.

Like I said in the other thread, Soccer in Iraq is SERIOUS business.

ATPN?

At least this was something accidental instead of intentional, but that isn't really any consolation to his family. Celebratory gunfire is never a good thing. It is dangerous and irresponsible no matter how you look at it. This could've happened anywhere...

You should have Onionized it a little more. Tazed his lifless corpse on the ground, etc... Use an NYPD cop instead. You'll get better replies to the thread.

Ya hopefully these incidents will serve as a way to convince people NOT to shoot guns in celebration. I feel sorry for the guy :( I read the article yesterday on BBC as it just broke out, and at that point they didn't know if it was on purpose or not.

As for the family, they most certainly deserve some sort of compensation.

Wow, how ironic is this. This goalie was the benefactor of a striker being shot in the head in another match, then he himself is shot after winning another match!

I can't believe the irony. And if the article hadn't said that the policeman was a Sinjar fan, I'd have suspected that he did it on purpose.

Wha? Where the hell do YOU live? The reasonably violent city of Philadelphia managed to survive the Phillies becoming world champions without one single accidental murder.

When's the last time you heard celebratory gunfire after a sporting event in a first-world country?

Then look at developing and war-torn countries. It seems people look for just about any reason to whip out their AK and fire off a few rounds.

Maybe I'm just in a dark mood at the moment because of how perverse an argument in another thread has gotten, but coupled with the first soccer thread this made me laugh.

Idiocy knows no national boarders, my friend. Besides, a lot of cultures/areas, not necessarily here in the US, tolerate celebratory gunfire. Doesn't make it right though. Even here in the US, this kind of thing can still happen depending on the security and relative sobriety of a crowd. People are idiots. Never underestimate them. I've never heard of a case of this where I live, but there is a reason people stress not to do this when teaching firearm safety. It does happen....

Soccer is just icing on the cake. In many 'first world' nations, soccer fans need no firearms to cause serious injury and/or death to the unsuspecting. :p

Well maybe not deaths through guns at sporting events...but deaths through lines at black friday ;) If we really wanted the sports comparison, BF could be interpreted as a 100m dash
