41 percent more households tuned into Gold Cup final than Stanley Cup final
June 26, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- The CONCACAF Gold Cup final attracted 41 percent more television households in the United States than the Stanley Cup finals clincher -- and that was just for the soccer game's Spanish-language telecast.

The United States' 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Mexico on Sunday received a 2.5 fast national rating on Univision, the network said Tuesday. That translates to 2.83 million households, nearly double the 1.48 million homes that watched the 2005 Gold Cup final between the United States and Panama.

This year's English-language telecast was on the Fox Soccer Channel, which is available in about 30 million homes and is not rated.

Anaheim's series-ending 6-2 victory over Ottawa in the Stanley Cup on June 6 received a 1.8 rating on NBC, which comes to 2,005,000 households.

The rating is the percentage watching a telecast among all homes with televisions, and a ratings point represents 1,114,000 households.

For the record I love soccer and respect hockey. I watched the gold cup but not the Stanely Cup final.

Let the soccer bashing begin. 🙂

Hmmm...soccer match between USA and Mexico being shown in the USA and the number of households watching the Spanish language broadcast is larger.

I wonder why! Perhaps some US Senators can tell me.

Hockey is more of a gate-driven sport....so no surprise there. The Stanley Cup finals are always sold out. And plus, all the Mexicans in the US tuned in to the Spanish language telecast of the Gold Cup finals.

As for me, I watched the Gold Cup on mute cause I only got Univision. I wanted to go to the game since it was in Chicago where I am, but it was sold out long before I checked.

All this proves is that the illegal immigrant population in the US is out of control.

The tackle at the beginning was hilarious. Wouldn't have been so funny had he gotten hurt but I honestly laughed aloud when I saw it. The offsides call was ok imo. I never saw a good angle that he was onsides when the original ball was played before the US player touched the ball. The Canadian announcers were hilarious when they got angry.

But they are illegals with cable.

And if they weren't here Univision would have drawn a big fat ZERO on the Gold Cup.

Hockey has a long way to go in repairing the damage from the lock-out but it is not out-viewed by soccer where legal Americans are concerned.

Edit: Like I said earlier, the Gold Cup ratings are a direct statement on our crappy border controls, not a reflection on America's choice between Hockey and Soccer.

Both Hockey and Soccer are great sports that weren't ever designed for American TV, Hockey has gone through many changes in the last few years...hopefully it doesn't kill it altogether in the US

Yes. Absolutely. It has nothing to do with the fact that football (soccer) is a great game and the most popular sport in the world

In the rest of the world, yes. Places like Mexico for instance! Soccer is huge there. In the US? Not so much. Think about it... a spanish-only cable network out-drew NBC. The OP wasn't citing Soccer vs Hockey globally, he was citing Soccer vs Hockey in the US.

When a spanish-only cable network out-draws NBC, who do you think is tuning in? It ain't Joe Sixpack. The fact is that we have so many illegals here a spanish-only network can out-draw a major network when soccer is on.
