Socaler's - Bonfire pit tips

After two weekends of not getting a pit (first was at Huntington and second was Bolsa Chica), we are determined to get one for an end of summer party this Sunday.

Yea, we know it's a labor day weekend holiday and it will be packed, but we are determined and planning to get there super early. We are thinking 6AM - does that give us a good chance of getting one? I'm reading some people go at Sunrise on holiday weekends?? :Q

We are thinking Bolsa Chica, although Huntington seems to have better parking access (had to wait in a huge line for Bolsa). We know it's first come-first served, but do you have to park first to get one? What if I dropped off my friend and he ran to get one while I found a parking spot? What's to stop someone from going there at 3AM and just sitting next to a pit? Do they not allow people on the beach or something? Anyone else have any other experiences? We just do not want to miss another one again.

Thanks!

I don't think you can on the public state beaches? Though i'm sure it's a beach by beach thing.

I went to corona del mar with friends for labor day a few years ago. Even that crappy beach was crowded to all hell. One of my friends literally got into a fight with a woman who was truly to jack our beach pit. It was pretty undignified (although I'll admit - watching two chicks fight was pretty awesome and every guy around for 40 meters probably thought so. As far as I know no videos or pics so sorry).

You better get there early and never leave. You stake your claim on that territory like you're claiming a new colony and defend it as such 🙁

you gotta get there way early. I think the beaches open at 5am, on July 4th we were down there at 430am and got a pit

Ooga - lots of beaches have firepits for a bonfire in socal. Me and a friend are planning on staying there from the AM until everyone arrives. I don't mind.

Huntington Beach opens at 6AM, at least the gates for the parking lot do. I'm still unsure on how it works. They allow you to be on the beach before opening to claim a pit?

Chorb - did you park first or how did you do it?

Thanks

I actually meant about camping out on the beach the night before. I think most close at some time. Sorry - reading back I see that that's not clear.

If you're set on Huntington perpare for massive crowds. I don't think it would be a bad idea to call them? I would imagine the people who work at the beach would have pretty specific advice for that beach.

@ Huntington beach, they might jack up the parking fee to $20 per car, since it's labor day weekend.

I live a block from Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington, we just walked to get a pit. But it will be $20 for a car to park in the beach lots, and probably all the lots will be filled up by 7am. If you get lucky you might be able to find a street spot in the nearby neighborhoods.

Best thing to do would be to go down to the beach and ask the parking attendant (I can't find the number) what time the lots open and what time the beach opens. I think 4th of july it opened earlier than usual.

Funny that there's a thread talking about bonfire pit parties in southern california... while LA burns

We used to go to the pits in El Segundo, I forget the name of the beach. I don't remember it being a pain to get one on a holiday, I think we usually showed up in the middle of the afternoon. I think the crowd gradually got a little more ghetto every year though.

It's weird cause there are two beaches, the city one that opens at 5:00AM, and the state one that opens at 6. I don't see anything different for labor day. We're planning on going to the state one because the city one with the pier and stuff is just crazy.

Did they let you go on the beach before the official open time? You said 4:30, so you just walked onto the beach even though it wasn't open?

Good luck. Considering Labor Day is the last summer holiday, people are going to want to go all out. Bonfires are fun and everything, but if you have to be there the night before, it seems to me that it would kill most of the fun.
