Heading from Socal to Tahoe on 4th of July weekend. I have never done the drive (always drove from SF/Davis/Sac). What is the best route? the 5, the 99, or the 395?

It's summer, so you don't have to worry about weather. Since that's the case, just google it for the fastest route.

5 north to 50 ---> tahoe :)

pretty much the same route as from sac, but with a 400 mile addition

edit: do NOT take 395

well, google maps shows 395 is 40 miles shorter but about 45 minutes longer in time. But then again, I hear the 395 is a really nice drive.

why no 395?

i assumed it would be a bigger difference in time that what you found... some of 395 is really nice (tehachapi certain times of year is quite beautiful) but its so winding i figured it wouldnt be practical. research ftw i guess :)

If you want a nice drive take 1 up the coast. Some real beautiful scenery out there. Takes hella long tho.

If you wanna get there for time, take the 5. It's the quickest route and I can generally drive from SoCal to Davis under 6 hours. If you wanna go for scenery, the 395 might be the way to go. If you're in no rush and are looking for a nice drive, why not go the potentially beautiful route?

the 1 is beautiful but its too out of the way. I looks like the 5 is the most efficient route. I was thinking 395 because people are less likely to be on 395 on a holiday weekend.
