SOB on opteron?

Overkiller

Rumor has it that the opteron will be able to run on nforce 3 boards...anyone have any benchmarks on SOB production w/ the opteron? i assume a P 4 C will still beat it given the natural advantage of intel chips in SOB....

so off to my next comment. Anyone have Centrino benchies?...or more info on Prescott?

Oooo, can't wait for those hummers to get here! 😀

Opteron will run on the nForce3 Pro 150 and nForce3 Pro 250 chipsets for single-CPU setups. VIA's K8T400M will do single or dual Opterons. I wouldn't be surprised if nVidia is concocting some kind of dual-ready chipset too.

As for SoB performance, that would be super-intriguing to find out firsthand. It rampages at SETI@Home, that much is known so far. 😀

I have no idea, but i'd like to know! 😀

Well, the Opterons have SSE2 enhancements, which SoB is optomised for, which is one reason why SoB goes lightning fast on P4s! Will just have to hope that the lower clockspeed won't cause too many problems 😉

hmm, but isn't the Opteron's SSE2 performance said to be far behind the P4's?
IIRC, from the review, the SSE2 performance didn't look that bad (at least it seemed to help when they enabled it in some benchmarks). I don't have the slightest idea how it compares to the P4 on SoB, though.

<-- is upset to see that newegg carries the processors but not the motherboards for Opterons. That means I couldn't order one even if I did have the money. :frown: 😉

All you need is for one of the unemployed EE's in the networking thread to wire a mobo up for you 🙂
