I checked my checking account balance earlier to see how much I would be able to transfer to a savings account. I found out I was missing almost a grand! $700 bucks spent at Sears.com. WTF and $100 bucks spent at some MFI FAMILY thing. Weird thing is...I still have my check card and everything so I'm confused how this happened. argghhh...dealing with BofA fraud team right now...

better not be one of you guys! :|

Someone transfered $2500 from my saving to my checking and then wrote a check. I caught them before the check cashed luckily.

This is the reason I requested a regular ATM card from my bank and use credit card for all my purchases. I know credit card can be compromise too but credit card has better protection then check card.

It's not hard to do. Any time you pass a paper check, you give anybody who sees your check all the information they need to perform a debit -- your name, your bank, your account number and routing number. In the past, the fraudster would have to print up a paper check with that information and hope to pass it off but these days they can just do an electronic debit.

It seems that banking in the US is pretty backwards. My friends in the UK have told me that banks there allow you to create a "whitelist" of entities that are allowed to perform an electronic debit. If you're not on the whitelist, an electronic debit won't go through. I've yet to find any US banks that offer that feature.

This just happened to my cousin. Someone actually switched his ATM card and gave him someone elses. The next day he finds that someone has withdrawn $160 from his account but DEPOSITED a check for $900. The bank said people do this so when the check comes back they will then have the account number and other information? Didn't really make sense to me.

Not to be nitpicky but this isn't really identity theft. Odds are it never went beyond using your credit card number, you'll get a new card & your money back & that will be the end of it.

Now if they start taking cards/lines of credit/whatever out in your name THAT is identity theft.

check card is an atm card with a visa/mc logo that can be used to make credit(where you sign) or debit(where you punch in your atm number)purchases.

Atm card can only be used at the atm for cold, hard cash, and you can also make purchases via debit in some places by entering in your number

Same thing...You can use your check card as an ATM card to get cash or use it as a credit card where the funds pull DIRECTLY out of your bank account - which is why you should NEVER use your check card for online purchases!
