While trying to diagnose the reason for my spontaneous reboots (a bad dimm) i defragmented my hard-drive...that act alone garnered me 40K cems/s!

that is more than what i get from doing a format/reinstall... :)

Just a little note that maybe those who haven't reformatted in a while or defragmented should do so and be surprised by the jump in performance...1 nite of downtime will surely pay off later :)

This thread reminded me that it had been awhile since my last defragment, so I went ahead and did it. After about 10 hours, I'm holding steady at a 3.6% improvement.

Ok I gave it a try with Windows XP here and got no improvement. How long are you guys running SoB before getting your initial rate. Remember that SoB does not report current rate but instead total rate for the entire time it has been running with out stopping. So if you play a game and the rate goes down it spends the time after the game playing trying to pull the rate back up and the actual speed at that time is faster than the reported rate.

This was after a defragment.....(w/ sob off). a reboot..and then i allowed sob to gear back up to speed over the course of a few more hrs of idle time..i came home and saw the jump.

if its been a while since the last reformat/reinstall or defragment..or if u just install stuff and get rid of it like crazy then there will be a gain. My results are simply on the high end b/c its been about 7-8 months since any sort of hard drive clean up (such as a reformat) has happened...

I'm running Win 2K. When I analyzed for the defragment, I was suprised to see almost my entire disk in red (fragmented files). After thinking about it for a bit, I guess its been 8 months since my last reinstall, and I hadn't defragged since. Still only got a small increase though.
