How does the ORU program keep their rates so high? They barely dropped when everyone else dropped by 3-5 M per day. I did add a couple clients this week, looking for more, but unlikely to find them.

I believe I know the answer to this one...they have zillions of not-so-very-fast clients. Consequently, the speed fluctuations that everyone experiences as the k/n pairs change get averaged over lots of clients and (more importantly) lots of time. A group of fewer, really-fast clients will see the fluctuations more.

The converse of this, of course, is that the client increases in speed affect their rate much less than yours. That means (unfortunately, from your viewpoint) that any upward creep that they are getting is probably due to them actually adding more boxen...

Thanks for the stats, congrats moriakaice.
I'm fluctuating all over the place... I've been at a "steady" daily average between 2.6 & 2.9g since I last changed configuration.
Thats a big difference considering these computers are always on or in operation during the same hours every day. This might be a result of hangups and other errors... for instance this computer usually outputs 300k cems/sec, but sometimes I'll catch it at 70k and after restarting it jumps back up.
Mathguy, could your service be modified to restart a service more often? like every hour? is there a downside to this?

amcdonald - that's an easy mod. The only downside I know of is that on a restart (if you don't have the service hidden through the Service Control Manager) the client pops up a message box (which the service handler dismisses), but which could be disconcerting during the day.

OTOH, I don't know of any guarantee that the rate will improve after a restart (although it always seems to...). I have to confess that this issue has been mystifying me for a while now...even after several hours of run-time, with affinity set properly, plenty of memory, all CPU time going to the clients (according to the Task Manager) the rate will vary tremendously before and after a restart. It's more drastic if the machine actually needs to be rebooted - when the service starts after a reboot it will often be 20% slower than it was running before the reboot. In the case that I observe closely (my main box) it usually settles down to "normal" only after the timed restart the next day. Sometimes several manual restarts will help the rate and sometimes not. My best guess at this point is that it has something to do with XP's scheduling algorithm, since I haven't observed such wide variation on 2K boxen. It's really aggravating, though, because once I observed the clients on my main box running at about 20% above their average - I then stupidly allowed Windows Update to do something or other that required a reboot and I've never been close to that speed again :|

It also sounds like you and I may be experiencing somewhat different things, since in my case I have never observed the rate to decline gradually, but rather to decline suddenly (at reboot) then increase gradually.

If I knew what was actually causing this, the problem could be dealt with, rather than the symptom! Let me know if you'd like to try out the "restart on the hour" approach or some variant like restarting whenever the client rate drops below a fixed tolerance.

I'd definitely try out an hourly restart function. I'd like to see if there's any tangible difference in overall reported rate, though it would be hard to tell with my account. still it would set my mind at ease

amcdonald - there are new versions posted of both sobsvc.zip (NT/2K/XP service handler) and sobsvc9x.zip (9x/Me service handler). These implement an undocumented "-h:<num>" switch which will do a periodic restart every <num> minutes. So, to do an hourly restart, use "sobsvc -h:60"

Let me know how this works for you...if it is helpful, I'll document the switch and let others know about it - if not, I'll just let it die an ignominious death, languishing in well-deserved undocumented obscurity

Note that this time interval is measured from when the service starts, so it won't necessarily be "on the hour"

I also just noticed in the code that you need to enable the timed restart feature [-r:<time>] for this to work, but the time you set for the time-of-day restart will be ignored (this wasn't intentional - I'll fix it if the feature turns out to be useful).
