SoB: Cannot get client to connect via ICS

As of right now I am still on a modem so I am using my WinXP machine to run ICS off of. (I have to use Windows because I am cheap and only bought a winmodem. 😛 )

Anyways all my window machines are just fine. But my linux boxes have a problem. All other services work just fine. I even have some things routing through such as FTP just fine. But when I try and start the client I get a cannot connect error.

Any idea? I have tried multiple ports and even routing SB through ICS and had no luck......

I am running RedHat 9.0 on the machine I am currently working one.

Ahh... goto ebay and search for 'pci hardware'. There you will find a dealer who sells new Intel 'hardware' based modems. They are not truely a total hardware modem. Those are made of three controllers, while a winmodem only has one. These Intel hardware modems has two of the three, and runs peachy on a Pentium 75MHz on linux (Mandrake 7.1).
I have bought from him many times (pcpartusa*com), usually 5 or more at a shot and resell them locally for one hell of a mark-up  being they work so sweet 🙂.
Anyway you can get one for $15.90 to your door. Roughly the same price for a winmodem without the headaches 🙂.

Otherwise I can not help you on your problem 🙁.

Make sure that the Linux boxes are getting the correct IP settings.

You will need to make sure it has the following:
IP Address: 192.168.0.x
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.0.1
Secondary DNS: Shouldn't be needed, if it is, use one of the ones listed for your dialup account when you do an ipconfig 🙂

If all these values aren't here (specifically default gateway, and to a lesser extent primary dns server) then the boxes won't connect to the internet at all so i've found. But, once these settings are here, then you should be fine 🙂

Hmm it should be setup fine. I am actaully running my ICS server at 192.168.1.100. And my linux box can connect out to everything else just fine. I do have the primary DNS set to one of my ISP's.... Let me change that and see what happens.

You running Windows 2k/XP ICS...or some other connection sharing??

Cos Windows ICS I thought only liked 192.168.0.1.... I'm using 2k3 Server which is using NAT, not ICS, and my address is 10.0.0.1 lol

I am running XP with ICS.

Actually you can run it on any IP it just defaults to 192.168.0.1

The strange thing is that only SoB cannot get out. Hmm I am looking for some freeware NAT servers. Let me see if I can find one....

Also I am wondering if its just RedHat 9.0 Have any of you ran it on it?

I just sold a Intel based modem! Darn it, if I knew it would work under Linux I would have thought differently about that.

Now will any new Intel based modem work? The one I bought was only 14 dollars.

I just tried firing up sb on an RH 9 system at work that I had successfully been running the client on in March. It failed to connect to the server. Must be an incompatibility with the newer kernels.

On the plus side, I got it to work by changing the ServerAddress from sb.pns.net to 216.163.34.105 in sclient.conf. Give it a try.

MereMortal nailed this one. The issue isn't with ICS rather it is a Linux / SB issue.

I had the same problem with Mandrake 9.1. When I changed the ServerAddress setting to 216.163.34.105 in the sclient.conf, everything started to work.

Now I can't wait to get back home and try it out.

Lets hope it works.

Whooohooo! Got it working. One problem I had was that I must of installed it before because there as a config file laying around. :Q It from some reason was picking it up instead of mine. Once I specified the config file (with the IP instead of the DNS name ) it work just fine. 🙂

Some more funny info. Well its been running for a day or so now and I had not seen a increase in my rate. Well come to find out I forgot to put my username and teamname into the config file! I put the IP in but thats it. Now that was smooth. 😛

Maybe you should have taken the nick of fumduck instead of the person that did 😛

Glad you got it sorted now though!
