So yeah, I'm stuck inside my APT

Cause my door knob decided today was the day to break off. Now I'm stuck here with nothing to do. Any suggestions on what I could do or does anyone know whether or not there will be any legal repercussions if I decided to remove the door knob? For the record, my landlord is an @sshole.

If you fix the doorknob yourself, I don't see that there would be a problem. Unless you call your landlord, and they have to fork out for a locksmith to fix the knob, change the locks, whatever.

EDIT: Even then, I can't see any legal problem with it, other than you might get in trouble for "damaging" the apartment, if your landlord really wanted to be an asshole about it.

At my apartment, any sort of changes of that nature have to be preapproved by the management with the agreement that the changes belong to the property after you leave.

Though, I'm sure you could just take the doorknob off if you really need to go somewhere.

Just remove the door, isn't it a safety hazard anyways, what happens if a fire starts in your apt?

Okay, I just examined the door knob. It seems that when they fixed it (when we got the apt, the door knob wasn't even secure, it was just hanging there) they installed it when the screws facing the OUTSIDE. Perfect, everyone is either home for summer or at school. Called landlord but no one picked up. Hm, how bad is a second story fall onto concrete?

Oh yeah dnetmhz, I have heard otherwise.

This has to be the strangest thing I've heard yet. Call a locksmith, send the bill to the landlord. Or call the police, let the landlord deal with it. And when you bust out, rotate the doorknob so the screws are inside, not outside.

Call a locksmith. Forward the bill to the landlord.

If you have problems, contact your local apartment association and ask what your rights are in your area as far as this goes. If you need help locating it let me know. I have a directory of all the AA's right here.

Just remove the pins holding the door in and pull the door out.

Well, I would call a locksmith, but I don't have any money. I don't think they take IOUs anymore. I don't want to trouble the police with this small matter, plus, less than a month to go before I move out. I would wait till my roommates get back and open the door from the outside, but I got to go now. Okay, I'm doing to jumping thing off my balcony thing; if I don't report back, you can assume a car ran over me.

You're a dumbass - you're going to jump down from the apartment when the fault is obviously with the shoddy construction of your apartment, hence the fault of the landlord's . . ..

I wouldn't if I were you, you're more likely to break a bone than to get out safely. Make a rope from bedsheets or something, then climb out.

Play some Porn really loud until the neighbours come to complain...

Unless you live near michaelD, then you'd have to wait until 11p before someone came to complain...

Good call! I would also recommend taking some pictures, both for our enjoyment and so the landlord can't try to claim the door didn't need fixing. I would say you should call a locksmith as well
