I was trying to take my wheel off and my socket slipped and bent the **** out of my key. Now i don't want to drive the car b/c of the 4 wheel locks on there already and i only have 1 key which is bent/broke. How can i get this off w/o spending to much moolah.

Just so you know i have to get my tire looked at tomorrow since its leaking air daily. Will a tire place be able to remove theses locks? Im looking to get all the locks replaces with a non locking lug nut to prevent this problem in the future or have 3 spare keys lol.

Thanks.

edit: Its sunday and the tire places all around closed early, so i cant call. ATOT to the rescue.

Why do people start their threads off with "so ya" or "so ummmm"? What are you all valley girls?

That is all, can't help you, sorry :)

i'm not sure if the tire place can, i know i've always given them my key, which is starting to become mishapen.

SAme here. They ALWAYS ask for my key when they have to change a tire. Im hoping they only ask so they won't have to break the key off if you happen to have one.

Call ahead of time, most place should have a set of tools to remove locks for those who lose the keys, may cost a few bucks more to have them use the special tools but whatcha gonna do, just call ahead before going and ask.

If the place gets the lock off, have them remove all 4. Replace them with regular lug nuts until you replace the key and/or get a new set.

Either way you are talking a few extra dollars for you mishap. Get the problem resolved before you have to call a hooker because you can not get a tire off to put on a spare.

Why would he call a hooker?

Exactly what i planned on doing. I dont think RIMS are stolen much now of days anyway. I doubt anyone would want these bent rims anyway.

Just FYI:

When you have them remove locking lug nuts, you run a risk of damage to the rim or to the mounting bolts. They will probably have you sign a waiver because depending on the style of your rim, they may or may not be able to take it off. I had the same problem and I ended up ordering another nut from the manufacturer...it was cheaper than what the multiple tire shops that I called quoted just to cut off the locking nuts.

Think about it before jumping in and getting them cut.

Just my 2cents.

Why would he call a hooker?
How else can he get the car fixed if he loses a tire?

alright you're gonna owe me for this one. take a craftsman socket...12 point, just slightly smaller than the locknut. get a big hammer and hit it until it's wedged on there really good. then just take off the nut, and go replace the socket and do it again and again and again. then replace it with regular nuts and don't be lame next time.

same thing happened to me. My key bent as well as the face on the locking nut broke off. Bolt removers could not grab...actually made it worse. Ended up taking it to a local shop...they welded a nut on it and removed it after it cooled. The place was really good and minimized damage to my wheel

So the hooker, trying to be helpful, reaches into the toolbox, and asks, "Wanna screwdriver?". He replies, "Might as well, I'm not gonna get this dammed tire fixed tonight anyway." ;)

I took it to discount tire and they kind of jipped me, but i didnt care. I dont have the sockets or tools needed to get this off myself and by the time i paid for it all. I would have came out to there little total for each tire. So in the end i wouldve jipped myself lol.

Good thing the chicago potholes helped bent my rim so more and now i need a new rim to stop the air leakage. I knew that because all my rims are bent, but this one pot hole must've opened up a bad bend already in the metal. Anyways im going to by 4 new rims for the stang so atleast she'll look better lol.

Absolutely! My wheel lock key got lost after an accident, and this is what they did to prevent damage to my rims (the nuts sink into the wheels).

You may have to round the inside lip of the 12 point socket just a small bit with a dremel to get it started over the nut. It works

This is the reason I take all my wheel locks off. I have stock rims so if someone wants them that much.. have at em. Its not worth my wife being stranded on the side of the road because of those things.

Chicago potholes aren't all that bad. Don't drive like a maniac and at least try to dodge them and you're fine.

:D Chicago burbs pot holes aren't bad. Once you get to the city.... CITY.... some of the pot holes aren't fixed yet and there really bad. Yes, i dodge them, but i;ll rather hit a pothole than swerve over into another car lol. Somtimes you have no chance, but to hit them.

this is exactly why I think wheel locks are a waste. i had mine on for like 2 years then I just decided to not put them on because the key was having trouble going in/out of like 3 out of the 4 locks, and I didn't want to be stuck w/the locks on but not be able to get them off.

So when I cleaned out my old car 2 weeks ago, I found the wheel locks in my middle compartment. I tried to put the key into them just to see if it could turn any of them since it had been 3 years or so since I used them.

The key wouldn't even fit into 3 out of the 4 locks, and when it fit into the 4th, I had to turn it hard as hell to get it to work. Luckily I never used them anymore.

Also, if a thief wants your rims, he's going to get those locks off no problem.

I've driven in the city many times, I know what it's like.
