How about instead of raising taxes, they cut costs, waste, and corruption?

By raising taxes you drive even more business out of the state. Fewer businesses means higher unemployment which means lower tax revenue. It's a vicious circle.

tax and spend liberals, basically they were overly dependant on silicon valley providing the big mega bucks in income taxes but when the bubble deflated, the liberals already came up with long term programs to spend the money, so now we have no money.

california already has the highest sales tax in the nation at 7.5-8.25% so we really shouldnt have this problem, silly democrats

WTH would Bush even meddle in this issue, it is a state issue. Bush did exactly what should have been done, keep the feds out of a state issue. God, some of you just like to blame Bush for everything. Maybe, because you don't have an intelligent argument.

By a ratio of nearly 2-to-1, poll participants also said higher taxes will be part of a solution to fill a budget gap that could hit $34.6 billion

oh gee, more taxes. at least bush cut our taxes twice

I didn't point my fingers at anyone, I just question why you think Bush should have done something to help out.

The goberment based their budget on projected incomes when the tech bubble was at it's most inflated point and increased state employess and overall spending.

Then the tech bubble burst, the energy crisis hit, and we had a moron governor in office.

That's what happened.

It's a state problem, not a federal one.

What are you talking about? I never called you a moron. I said that you didn't use an intelligent argument. My basis of my defense is not that you called him a moron, I don't care what you call him, but was the fact that you think he should have done something. He shouldn't have, it is not a federal issue and if that makes him a moron, well then good. I'll take a moron in office who legislates like that.

let's not forget what caused the energy crisis in the first place: deregulation. and who's big idea was that? republicans! yay! go republicans! another wonderful economic situation squandered to fill the pockets of a few.
but i don't understand blaming bush in particular for california's economic woes, and certainly not for it's energy problems. blame cheney if you must place the blame on a federal person, but i doubt bush had anything to do with it either way. not that i like the guy, but it's a stretch to say he was responsible in any way.

And you'd be wrong. While the government arguably could have foreseen the energy crisis breaking out earlier, once it actually hit, the doomsday scenario was quickly defused. Or how quickly we have forgotten.

The main problem is that in the process, (mostly out of state) energy companies raped CA for $10 billion, and that relatively expensive long-term contracts were signed. If FERC would simply do its job, both of these transgressions could be fixed in one way or another.

And I wouldn't call it a state issue when a handful of western states were being held hostage by energy traders engaging in market manipulation and in some cases, fraud. At the time, Dick Cheney basically said the markets were sound and would self-correct. Obviously, he was flat-out wrong.

Deregulation has worked quite well here in Texas, thank you. Maybe California needs to look at the way they deregulated, as well as their refusal to start up any new plants.
