I'm pretty sure Windows Vista/7/8 all ring into Microsoft every few months or so.

You're not being forced to buy a new license, just to ring in and say "Hey, I'm activated, k bye".

This is specific to the volume licensed versions. Volume licensing uses KMS to distribute and mange keys, so like any site license system the clients need to periodically check in to make sure the site license is still valid. What OEM and retail versions of Windows do is completely different.

Anyhow, to answer the OP's question, yes. Win8 Enterprise has to check in every 180 days. If you need more details on the process you'll probably want to check with your Microsoft rep.
