AT&T I would imagine, most Nokia phones use AT&T-compatible bands. The bigger question is will it come to more carriers.

I remember reading that Nokia is going to be drastically changing their business model in the USA. It used to be that they only sold their high-end phones unlocked. Now they will be selling their phones subsidized through the carriers.

In other words, all bets are off. All we can really do is guess at this point.

That said, Lumia 800 is using the MSM8255 chip which doesn't have CDMA modems on it. Lumia 800 in its current version could only work on the GSM carriers in the USA.

Anyway, whatever we get here will likely be customized for the carriers. I think T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T are all likely candidates for a Nokia WP.

Verizon seriously does need a greater variety of WP7 handsets. I'm not even a big fan of WP7 but I'm always for more options, variety, and competition.

I am tired of waiting. First I waited some 8 months for Galaxy S II. Then right when I was going to buy it, the Droid Razr and Nexus Prime are announced so I am waiting for them to come out. They say the Lumia 800 is coming "sometime" in 2012. Even if it's January, that's MORE waiting. I wish they would just release things or at least wait a lengthy time between products to give people a chance to buy something.

Nokia isn't going to release phones in the U.S. unless it has a carrier completely on board with its plans. I think it would just cancel the launch rather than botch it, and would retreat back into the rest of the world, where it's more comfortable.
The Nokia 800 is a very cool phone. Hopefully we'll get to see something even cooler here in January.

The 710 just went through FCC certification with T-Mobile bands. I haven't heard anything about the 800 yet, unfortunately.

Of course, if you're on AT&T you can just import a Lumia 800. You just need a micro SIM.

I have to disagree.
Palm and RIM were allowed to compete and couldnt. They died on their own. In fact we got the Pre Veer and some others even though they knew they werent going anywhere.
WP7 was allowed to compete freely and not many people were impressed.
Nokia was allowed to sell phones and they kept putting up crap. No one bought them.

It isn't about who is allowed to compete. The fact that the networks are not interchangable give way more power to the carriers than they would have if someone could just take their phone over to another carrier without issue. Imagine if the iPhone was completely unlocked, and anyone could choose one of the current big 4 carriers on a whim just by changing their sim? That would completely change the market altogether.

No you can't. Tmo's and ATT's 3G bands are not compatible. And without 3G smartphones today are basically crippled. Any phone made specifically for Verizon and Sprint (CDMA only), cannot be used on any GSM carrier. Again, if all four were GSM, sharing the same bands, it would be a COMPLETELY different market.

That's fine but I can use any phone I own on any carrier I want in the UK. Just stick the sim card in and good to go.

They wait plenty of time between products--there will always be something better (or with more hype at least ) if you wait a few more months. If you want to have the latest and greatest, you're gonna have to spend the $$ to get it when it's available. Just find a product you like and buy it already.
