So will Bing succeed or will it crash and burn like their Passport Wallet?

Years ago during the Internet boom, Microsoft created Passport Wallet.

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2000/05-17passport.mspx

"The Microsoft Passport single sign-in service allows consumers to use the same user name and password at any participating Web site -- creating a more efficient, comfortable and enjoyable Internet experience."

THey offered deep discounts to attract people. but when the discounts ended, Passport crashed and burned.

Will Bing succeed when their 20% rebates stop? Why/Why not?

I think it will be short lived. Google is and probably always will be the search king.

And what's with their cheesy implementation on servers? They somehow pushed an update that we did not approve to our print server (we're not even doing any updates at this point so really not sure how it went through). When you search for a printer that does not exist, it brings you to Bing page trying to find it online. wtf were they thinking?

Actually whatever happened to that other site made by pissed off google employees? It was suppose to crush Google. :p

Bing doesn't give me anything I can't already get with Google.... I see no reason to switch to it from something that works perfectly fine already. I'm guessing once the promotions end, Bing will crumble.

Google keep going the way they are and i can see a big backlash.

At some point people are going to get a bit freaked about the amount of information they have given to a company they are not even a customer of.

Doubleclick used to have a wretched name and google is doubleclick on steroids (not to mention they bought them of course). Yet google has maintained its positive reputation because of its free services.

Its only a matter of time before more discomfort with the privacy issue sets in tho and the tide of discontent gains momentum.

Yeah, and doesn't Google always say "do no evil" or something like that?

I used to be all for Google. Now, I'm kind of worrying because of how they are part of everything we do. From searches, to email, to CC payments, to phone calls, to phone OS's, and the list keeps on going. I don't like any company to have that much information, nor do I trust any company that has access to all of that at will.

Might as well use http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ that way they have completed in tracking all your history.

Thats the thing, if you use google maps or have an Android phone they also know where you are at all times as well.

Bing will not succeed. Problems with it's cashback program are leaving a bitter taste in a lot of people's mouths.

True. I've purchased about $300 worth of stuff online @ Best Buy, went through BING for 10% cash back. They've posted the cash back for some of the little orders I've made, but I'm having to contact them for the bigger orders to see what is up. A lot of people are having to do this. It's bullshit.

google's too 'liberal' with its searches and its business dealings. Bing is 'slightly' more conservative. endorsed by most freepers as lesser of two evils.

or so i've heard.
