So...why no reviews of the ASUS A8V-E Deluxe?

Folks, this is weird. Asus is not exactly an obscure brand, and has at this moment the only shipping K8T890 PCI Express based mobo out there. And there are NO reviews. I decided to chance the Asus name--I know, probably a bad decision--and bought one. I have yet to install it, as I am waiting on my new S939 processor to arrive from NewEgg.

I just don't get it--the board is available from at least a dozen different sites. It is NOT in short supply. Why isn't ANY hardware site picking up this board and reviewing it? Heck, the Soltek K8T890 ENGINEERING SAMPLE has received review attention from Legion Hardware and others, but a production Asus board receives almost no mention at all? What the heck is going on?

That rant over, does ANYONE have any tips regarding this board? I want my install to go smoothly. I will be using a S939 Winchester 3500+, PQI DDR 400 Turbo Series Dual Channel, with the 2-2-2-5 timings. Plus a ATX 2.0 Enermax Noisetaker 485W PSU (Active PFC, ringcore, etc). I am also trying to decide on a video card--leaning towards a high-end ATI card.

Anyone?

After checking out a couple of other threads here on the forums, plus a German hardware review site (forget name) that while difficult to read, everything is coming across pretty clear--DO NOT BUY THIS MOBO. Is THAT why the major review sites are not putting up a review of this mobo? Afraid of ASUS? Apparently this board has serious compatibility issues with the 6600GT line of cards, which is totally amazing--how could ASUS put out a product that would have issues with one of the most popular video cards on the planet right now? The German review site was using the latest rev board and latest BIOS, so I know if was not that....RMA'ing this thing RIGHT NOW with ZipZoomFly. I should have waited for more data--it was stooooopid, I know, to buy this thing without adequate reviews.

Oh, I will goto NewEgg and pickup the Chaintech NF4 Ultra board instead. Unless someone else thinks the Foxconn is the better value? The Foxconn has only one review on OCWORKBENCH, and they liked it, but the Chaintech has been extensively reviewed. Any input?

Now I know why NewEgg is not carrying any K8T890 mobos right now (especially the ASUS one...they are not dumb, and must test the products before they sell them, or at least they are paying attention).

You RMAed the ASUS before trying it?

Anyway, I'm pretty disapointed with the lack of reviews for A64 PCI-E boards in general. The ASUS A8V-E Deluxe is a pretty expensive board, unless you plan to use the WiFi I would say it's a pretty poor value compared to others, so that's why it has less feedback.

As for the issues you read about; they can most likely be ironed out with a new BIOS. In fact they might have been already, BIOS 1002 is out.

Also newegg is selling it now.

Yup, you are right. NewEgg is carrying it. Yeah, I did not even take the board out of the box. Why bother? The German site was testing with 1002.

I totally agree on the lack of reviews in general on the PCI-E A64 boards. One would think that hardware review sites would be all-over these boards, especially the ASUS as it is available from so many sources. Hey, even if it is not a great value (and I agree with you on that one), then put up a review anyway just to show what the K8T890 chipset can do, if nothing else, on a production board.

Usually you look for reviews BEFORE you buy. There are few reviews, becuase nVidia holds the market for good reason. They are better right now by far.

aeternitas:

I agree. I made a dumb move.

I wanted to jump on the PCI-E bandwagon, and picked up the Asus board before thinking. Impulse buy, which is a bad thing when choosing components. I do know better, but I had a moment of weakness.

The NF4 Ultra is the way to go. Right now the Foxconn looks like the better buy, since it has IEEE 1394, along with all the other goodies, and comes with more accessories than the Chaintech. Not to mention it costs less. I have heard nothing negative about the board, and their SiS 755FX board is totally stable (although I fully know that I cannot purchased based upon that--it is just an indication that Foxconn is getting better as a mobo manufacturer)--Foxconn is beginning to use good capacitors like Sanyo, pleasing enthusiasts such as us.

This really sucks because I was seriously considering this board for a comp I'm building for my brother. Oh hell oh well, hopefully asus whips up something else.

hi slippy:

Well, perhaps I saved you major headaches by posting. Go for the Foxconn NF4 Ultra board on NewEgg. It is $120 right now, but you might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere. If you decide to hang back with AGP, then the Soltek K8T800Pro board is one of the BEST as far as stock speed stability and speed. Just look at the web reviews and the reviews on NewEgg. In fact, Soltek never seems to put out a bad board....

Thanks for the advice. It is still a month or so off, so I've got plenty of time to research options and I will consider that board. I'm now a PCI-E head, and I'm not looking back. I will try to do more research on soltek and consider it.

I find it funny that you guys in this thread have already disowned the board after your own grumblings of the lack of reviews, and after not even testing it for yourself. Do I trust a German site? Nope.

Hi blurredvision:

Not just the review site. Also from other user's experiences here in the forums. One guy had the SAME issues with nVidia video cards (in his case, a 6800). It was that, coupled with the review, that made up my mind.

I've been very interested in the A8V-E Deluxe motherboard as well. I'm not sure what's going on in terms of the problems some people are having, but you might be interested to know that a custom PC vendor called JNCS (in New York) is using this board standard in some of their preconfigured systems AND they've been pairing it with a 6600GT video card. So, I decided to make an inquiry. They said they've "sold about 70 systems or partial systems using the a8v-e -- no problems as yet." They also noted that in terms of brands of video cards, they're using the "Gigabyte 6600GT and now XFX and BFG 6600GT without problem."

So, I find that encouraging. I'm not ready to abandon my interest in this board yet. :)

I have this board and it works great. I have a 6600GT card with no problems. Also the new bios 1003 came out just a few days ago and it fixed issues with the 6600GT.

I just updated the BIOS ..... no luck .....

When my computer boots the text and images move across the screen so slow ..... The OS won't even load most of the time. The computer runs fine on a regular PCI Card though ..... I wonder if I should go with the x700 card.

I am going to RMA my Gigabyte Nvidia 6600 card today ......... I figure if the new doesn't work then I need to go with a different card ....... What I am afraid of is that I am wasting alll this money for shipping and it might be my motherboard's PCI-Express slot that is bad ...... this is so frustrating .... I need to play my CS Source

I alsop just got an ABIT IS7 board that I am gonna overclock a P4 2.8 with ........ I can't start that project until my AMD is up and running .... I need at least one functioning comp
