So, why is my card underclocking??

Specs are in my signature.

I had nTune to log temps/control fan speed. When RivaTuner 2.01 came out, I uninstalled nTune and got RivaTuner working.

Today, while I was checking temps, I saw that I had an all-time low (even though it's not cold outside). However, I soon found out, that it was because of this. I never touched the overclocking features of either two tweaking suites, so seeing this is insanely bizzare. Any thoughts? Kinda sucks running my card ~375Mhz slower than stock.

(BTW I get around 35 fps in fear at these clocks, at 1680*1050, High settings :) )

Edit: I've already tried uninstalling my old drivers, and reinstalling the newer (and beta) 158.24s. I'm on Vista Ultimate x64.

Congratulations!

You have the slowest 8800GTX on the planet! :D

In all seriousness, have you simply tried to OC the card back to normal?

Haha, since I've broken the slow barrier, I'll let this one of a kind card go for a scant $830 (I'll pick up an 8800ULTRA with the money :p).

Actually, I tried your suggestion. However, RivaTuner won't let me "overclock" back to stock speeds, and it won't determine my stock clocks even after a reboot. I'm thinking maybe I should uninstall then reinstall RivaTuner and see how that goes.

Have you tried uninstalling Rivatuner and see if it makes a difference? I think it may be your power supply. NVIDIA cards lower the clocks speeds if it is not receiving enough power. BTW, you might have the only Geforce 8800GTX which the ATI Radeon 2900XT can outperform.

I uninstalled my RivaTuner - but now I don't know how to check if my speeds are back up to stock. Should I reinstall?

Edit: Just reinstalled... still suck clocks.

If it's my powersupply... I'm really kicking myself for not getting in on the free Ultra 600W PS in hot deals last week.

Try Gainwards Expertool:

http://www.gainward.com/en/support/XPRT_50.zip

Its very pretty and works fine with my 8800GTS although I decided to simply flash my graphics card BIOS with a higher clock speed so that I did not have to run a third party utility. I know it will work with Windows Vista x86 but not sure if it will work with Windows Vista x64. Good luck.

Where can I check clocks with that utility?

I'm pretty upset right now... I need sleep.

You have to install it. It then adds an icon on your taskbar from which you can choose certain options, one of them being performance I believe.

I did install it... but I don't have a tab for performance. It goes:

DeskTop
Color
Information
Display Properties
DirectX Information
Zoom In
Close

Hmm... what PSU are you using?

IIRC, there should be something in the Nvidia event log about being downclocked because of low power.

Antec TruePower II 550W, and how do I view the nvidia event log?

Edit: I'm going to bed now, but I won't be upset if the answer is posted :)

Unfortunately, I dont have an Nvidia and cant remember how to get to it.

I remember I forgot to plug in the PCI-E power connector on my 7800GT when I first got it and I got a message saying that my card had been downclocked because of insufficient power or something.

I think the event log appears when you have nTune installed and are running the NVMonitor.

I didn't get any notification of this kind. Hmm. Well, I've heard that my particular Antec has had the history of having capacitors go bad, so low insufficient power might be the culprit. I would like to know for sure before shelling out money for a new PSU.

Thanks for the responses though.

Goodnight. :)

Try one more thing. Only one of the PCI-E connectors on the Geforce 8800GTX gives an audible warning. The other just causes the card to downclock if it is not receiving enough power. You may want to try shutting down the PC, swap the power cables around on the graphics card, then turn your computer on. If you get a loud beep from the card, you then definately blame it on the power supply. If not, then you should probably go to bed and wish that it was all just a bad dream.

All right... tried swapping the PCIE connectors, no beeps or anything, but clocks still suck. WTF is going on?

Bump... any other thoughts/suggestions before I call Antec tomorrow. Is there any PROOF that this is a power supply issue?

Sure it's not 2D/idle mode? Have any "PEG" (PCI Express Graphics) acceleration features in your BIOS (a la ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe)? Are your PCI express clocks normal?

8800GTX doesn't have 2d/idle mode. I don't think that anything in my bios is up (I haven't touched it in about a month).

So... checked my BIOS, nothing that could be out of ordinary. Clocks are normal, and I don't have any PEG settings. I guess I call Antec tomorrow and see if I can get a new PSU.
